Plant Mind Control

This is Your Mind on Plants by Michael Pollan

July 13, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 1: Edibles I think the only other thing I’ve read of Michael Pollan’s was Food Rules, which was as it sounds, a general rules list with brief discussion per rule. They were pretty common sense, and I generally agreed with them. I know he’s actually a bit more controversial than that, but it’s only now I know why. I’ve had This is Your Mind on Plants on my TBR shelf for a while. Now I’ve read it. While the subject isn’t edibles in the […]

Medieval Over Time in Pictures Has No Substance

The Fantasy of the Middle Ages by Larisa Grollemond, Bryan C Keene

June 24, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I realize that The Fantasy of the Middle Ages was basically designed as an accompaniment to an exhibit at the Getty Museum and as such was possibly never meant to be a fully standalone book. Except that it now is, and as a stand-alone book, this is beyond shallow. It has a lot of pretty pictures, but often with little context of the history or art of the source manuscript) , and it brings up aa lot of things about how the Middel Ages in […]

Maybe next time I skip the omnibus version

Miles Errant by Lois McMaster Bujold

June 23, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

There should be a content warning for the Mirror Dance section of Miles Errant; there were some mildly graphic descriptions of highly unpleasant things, mostly torture. I’m also learning that maybe the omnibus editions aren’t the best idea, at least for me. “The Borders of Infinity” doesn’t really fit narrative-wise with the other two novel/las (Brothers in Arms and Mirror Dance) even if they are apparently chronologically in order. Overall, for all three stories, there are some things of interest, but almost as many problems […]

Series Conclusion but Maybe Not the End

The Untold Story by Genevieve Cogman

June 18, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

The Untold Story is kind of the end of the Invisible Library series, but in the post-script there is the suggestion that maybe that’s not quite right; maybe there will be an Act 2 of sorts at some point in the future. For most of the series, there’s been a couple of major questions that do get answered as well as several others brought up in more recent volumes, including why was Alberich trying to destroy the Library, who are Irene’s birth parents (and why […]

Bloody Magic Books and the Future Reread

Ink Blood Sister Scribe by Emma Torzs

June 17, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader 3 Comments

You know it’ a good read when you start thinking about re-reading a book as soon as you finish it for the first time. Ink Blood Sister Scribe is the first book like that for me in a pretty long while. In some ways the premise is familiar but it still works: Esther and Joanna are half sisters from a family who guards a collection of magic books, but they’ve been separated for years for reasons neither of them fully understands; they need to reunite […]

Tennal the Chaos needs more Motivation

Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell

June 12, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I really liked Everina Maxwell’s debut Winter’s Orbit, so I made sure to get Ocean’s Echo as soon as it came out. I saved it for June as school is out and also Pride month. Ocean’s Echo is not a direct sequel which is sort of too bad but fine since I already knew that, but it’s definitely got some parallels. Basically an order vs chaos pair are forced together and must work through their personal and public problems; this worked out quite well the […]
