An Approachable GBBO book just in time for the holidays

Cheeky Treats: Brilliant Bakes and Cakes by Liam Charles

December 23, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Every year I do a bit of shelf clearing, gathering things I’ve bought and probably read, that I am not likely to read again. I sell them, and use the funds for holiday travel to visit family, while trying to not buy too many replacements too quickly. I only got two books from the shop I sold an entire bin to, so that’s a win. Especially if one of them is a baking book by a Great British Bake Off participant who has become a […]

Awkward encounters in the giant wooden elephant and beyond

Treachery on Tenth Street by Kate Belli

December 23, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

When I put the fourth book in the Gilded Gotham Mystery series (just released) on a Christmas list, I realized I may not have read the third, so I got it from the library. Almost fitting in a way, since Treachery on Tenth Street actually (non-spoiler) ends with a reference to the eventual arrival of Christmas. The mystery is almost secondary here, since there is a good bit of emphasis on characters realizing how they feel about each other. The obvious attraction has been clear […]

Yay mystery stuff 😁

December 15, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

So life has been a little nuts and I’m totally behind, but whoever sent me two packages, I’ve got them and thanks! I hope you don’t mind too much my waiting but I want to have something to look forward to when I get home from holiday travels. If it helps, it’ll still technically be during the Christmas season if you go by the 12 days 🙂

Possibly a little overkill on the biscuit variations

Still We Rise by Erika Council

December 7, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I live in the US South; I am aware that biscuits come in many styles and types, and that everyone’s granny had the best ever recipe.  A book about a bunch of different things you can do with biscuits makes sense. The one thing is though that there are about 60 pages of what’s nearly the exact same recipe, just switching out the fat (whole milk, sour cream, yogurt, duck fat, vegetable shortening, cream, lard, mayo). This section is basically repeating the recipe “2-ish cups […]

A cookbook wherein the cultural concerns over wording miss the measurement question

Chetna's Indian Feasts by Chetna Makan

December 7, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

If I had access to fresh curry leaves (and I don’t live within 100 miles of anywhere that’s likely to have them), I might be tempted to try most everything in Chetna’s Indian Feasts. Even though she didn’t win her season of Great British Bake Off, the author seems to have done pretty well in setting herself up in the food world. I know she’s done several cookbooks before this one; I might be tracking down one or two of those. Indian Feasts is as […]

Getting it mostly right in the end

Kooky volume 3 by Miriam Bonastre Tur

December 3, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Volume 3 of Hooky shows us what the kids can really do when they start to free themselves from the adults and start building the world they want to see. There’s a three year time skip at the start and due to a probably natural death, it’s time for some big decisions, like does Monica really want to marry William like she’s said for a good chunk of the story up to now? Or maybe has her heart shifted? Dorian has been missing the entire […]
