Key Elements of a Hate to Love Romance Missing

The Wedding Party by Jasmine Guillory

August 16, 2019 by Classic 2 Comments

So this pains me. I bought this today and ended up not really enjoying it. It was a fight to finish because in the end Maddie and Theo were not as intriguing as Alexa and Drew (The Wedding Date) and even Carlos and Nik (The Proposal). If you are going to do a hate to love romance you have to make me actually believe the two people don’t like each other. We are finally shown what happened when Maddie and Theo first met and yeah, […]

Elements of Story Were Interesting, Just Didn’t Work

Deception on His Mind by Elizabeth George

August 16, 2019 by Classic 2 Comments

So…we have a book where Havers is the lead and Lynley is only in it for a few moments. I don’t think the book worked without Lynley being included. Also Havers started to bug me since based on her character it made zero sense why she got so invested in her next door neighbor. I also thought the ending of who killed the murdered man was a reach and a half. It just didn’t make any sense from what we know. I honestly thought it […]

Great Book in Series That Focuses on Havers

In The Presence of the Enemy by Elizabeth George

August 16, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Not too much to say except how much I loved this one. George focuses not on Lynley in this one, but also Havers for a good portion. We have a shocking crime and a reveal that I didn’t see coming. There is some poor Deborah stuff going on, but it’s not all encompassing like it has been in the last few books. “In the Presence of the Enemy” follows a tabloid journalist (Dennis Luxford) who is told that unless he prints the truth about his […]

Whatever

Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey

August 8, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Seriously the most insipid characters I have read in a romance novel in some time. I loathed the heroine who just needed to get any type of life, hated her sister in law who was a nasty piece of work to her husband, and thought the hero was lame. There’s also a women’s only league that the heroine starts and I ended up disliking every damn woman that popped up in this book after that. “Fix Her Up” follows former baseball star and now wash-up […]

Could Not Get Into This One: DNF at 25 Percent

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin

August 8, 2019 by Classic 4 Comments

I tried. Really. I hate it when I don’t get into a classic. I have been told for years that I should read Ursula K. Le Guin and how much I would like her and maybe I should just try something else. This book didn’t make any sense to me. I kept reading words and going what in the world does this mean? And some of the sentences/paragraphs felt overly written. I just finally decided that I wasn’t enjoying it and moved on to another […]

A Tale of Two Sisters

Mrs. Everything by Jennifer Weiner

August 8, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Trigger warning: Rape Wow. So this was good. I think that some parts were a bit too long, but I can’t really complain about that when I think that Weiner did such a great job with character development along and weaving all of the plot elements together. Weiner also includes certain pop culture and historical incidents (the Kennedy assassination, student protests, war in Vietnam, the me too movement, and even Hillary Clinton running for President of the United States) that are not front and center […]
