Fleishman Is in Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner

September 9, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

I heard about this book from so many people that loved it and I was reading this yesterday wondering if the author was ever going to get to the point. I didn’t dislike any character, I just didn’t feel engaged. Brodesser-Akner chose to tell this story via certain narrative styles that didn’t work. We have a first person point of view told by someone who used to be close to one of the characters that we follow for most of this book (her name is […]

What a Struggle and Letdown

Unnatural Creatures by Neil Gaiman

September 9, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

This book took me so many days to force myself through. I should have just DNFed it and found another book for the “Supernatural” square. Ah well. Not too much to say here except that most of these short stories were a flop IMHO. I have to say that the way these stories are pieced together doesn’t really work very well at all. The flow between stories is so sharp and I keep getting taking out of each story as soon as I move on to […]

Great Update to Turn of the Screw

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware

September 9, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

So this is probably my favorite Ruth Ware book that I have read. The other ones were missing key elements or just were not developed enough in my opinion. In “The Turn of the Key” Ware updates “The Turn of the Screw” to contemporary times. Instead of a governess, we have a live in nanny. Instead of two children, we end up having our governess deal with three. And it also takes a while for everything to be revealed. The main reason why I didn’t […]

Two Stories in One

Meant to Be Yours by Susan Mallery

August 31, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. This book will be released on October 22, 2019.  So this was a great romance by Mallery. I just found out she has a series called Happily Inc. that I just heard of it. This is the 5th book in the series. I have read her other series and now want to go back and read the beginning of this one. Readers also get a nice bonus of […]

What Would a Wife Do?

The Wife by Meg Wolitzer

August 31, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

This book is amazing. Wolitzer perfectly captures the voice of a wife who has gone bitter and is full of some regrets on how she lived her life. The main character, Joan Castleman is flying to Finland with her husband, Joseph “Joe” Castleman. Joe has won the Helsinki for her works in literature. Joan starts to think back to when she first met Joe and also provides insight into how he is based on the women who raised him. The back and forth to the past […]

Silver to Gold

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

August 31, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

I don’t know what to say about this awesome book. Novik does a great job of developing three characters (Miryem, Wanda, and Irinushka). The setting of the story is great and we have a fire demon, a race of people called the Staryk who live in a wintery world that is adjacent to the Russia the story takes place in. I loved all three of these characters equally (which almost never happens). I wanted a follow-up story though about what happens to Miryem. The ending […]
