Pretty Boring Ghost Story

The Invited by Jennifer McMahon

September 9, 2019 by Classic 2 Comments

This is the second book by McMahon I have read and honestly this may be my last. There was nothing really wrong with this one, I just found myself getting bored. I think that McMahon going back and forth between Helen and Olive didn’t work. I also didn’t really care for Olive so that didn’t help. We have the underlying ghost story which was intriguing, but not enough to keep me wholly invested while reading this one. “The Invited” follows married couple, Helen and Nate […]

Struggle Read

Cat Out of Hell by Lynne Truss

September 9, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Woo boy. This was not good. I think at one point I was going to DNF, but decided to just get done with it so I can throw it back from whence it came. An interesting synopsis does not a good book make. I was so happy to finish with this one I leaped into my next book. “Cat Out of Hell” follows a man who just lost his wife, Alec Charlesworth. Alec is a man after a reader’s heart. He’s a librarian who just […]

Not a Great Homage to And Then There Were None

The Decagon House Murders by Yukito Ayatsuji

September 9, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Have to say that in the end I was disappointed. You tell me that this book is a homage to “And Then There Were None” and it ends up just being kind of a mess with an ending that was nothing like that book. It didn’t help that Ayatsuji had some of the book following two other characters so you don’t stay on the island with the characters who are being picked off one by one. I do like that we were given a glossary […]

Another Great Marple!

They Do it With Mirrors by Agatha Christie

September 9, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

I just loved this from beginning to end. As someone else said, I love it when Christie provides a diagram to show where a murder is. It’s like you have your own game of Clue to play. Miss Marple is still the sharpest knife in the drawer. I can’t say that I saw the ending at all. I was leaning towards one way and then found out I was wrong. The ending leaves things on a nice note for several of the characters. Miss Marple […]

No HEA or HFN Honestly

The Middle-Aged Virgin by Olivia Spring

September 9, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

So first rule of romance novels is what? You have to end with either a Happily Ever After or a Happy For Now. If you don’t, it’s not a romance. And this book was not a romance. I ended up feeling beyond annoyed through most of this book and wish that I had DNFed it. I loved Spring’s other book so I thought I would enjoy this one. Nope, the main characters becomes man obsessed to the point that I wondered what she did at […]

Wish it Was Longer

Only When It's Love by OIivia Spring

September 9, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Well I enjoyed this one a lot. The main character was engaging and I loved the story-line of her having enough of being ghosted and treated terribly for her to go ahead and go 6 months without sex while dating. I thought the secondary characters were developed well, though I disliked her cousin Roxy. And the book in the end really did showcase how much time was being spent by her in obsessing over men and not focusing on what makes her happy. The ending […]
