Pro: It Was Short

White is for Witching by Helen Oyeyemi

October 4, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

I am seriously going to hard pass on future books by Helen Oyeyemi. I don’t get them/like them and they feel like too much effort to finish. I should not struggle to understand what the author is trying to convey while reading this much. The writing is just broken sentences and thoughts. I don’t even know who was who until I got to around page 30 or 40 or something like that. I stopped paying attention. I think once again that Oyeyemi was trying to […]

Solid Entry in Prey Series

Field of Prey by John Sandford

October 4, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

I thought that Sandford did a good job with this one. It’s a solid book. The main reason why I gave this four stars though is that I felt like once again there is too much Letty in this. And I have to wonder about her being at a murder scene and telling the cops how someone must have gotten shot. I still find this character less than useless, but at least Sandford has her shipped off to college by the end of this one […]

Last Short Story Was a Bust

Randomize by Andy Weir

October 1, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

So this was the shortest of the stories in the “Forward” collection and honestly my least favorite. It was beyond boring and the ending was just a meh moment to me. I wanted something more for a supposed science fiction book. Talking about quantum physics and entanglement didn’t do a thing for me. “Randomize” is at the heart just a boring heist story. We follow a member that plans on stealing from a Las Vegas casino using quantum physics. Yeah, that’s a new one on […]

The Last Words You Will Hear…

The Last Conversation by Paul Tremblay

October 1, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Wow. This was a bang up short story in the collection. I loved it. It had a lot of horror elements I thought working for it too. The ending gave my goosebumps. “The Last Conversation” follows an unnamed person (we never find out if they are male or female which I liked) who wakes up slowly and cannot see. We don’t know what has happened, except a person named Doctor Kuhn is the only person that the unnamed person can talk to via an intercom. […]

Third Act Weighs Down Short Story

You Have Arrived at Your Destination by Amor Towles

October 1, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Well not too much to say about this one except the third act one of the characters went on about actually weighed down this book a lot. I loved the concept (able to use an algorithm to choose what path an unborn child will possibly lead) but after the character of Sam lives the corporation the book just got messy. “You Have Arrived at Your final Destination” follows Sam whose wife Annie has talked him into having a child via a corporation called Vitek which […]

I Stared into the Abyss…

Strangers by Dean Koontz

October 1, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

This has to be one of my least favorite reads of 2019. Good lord this is just bad. And it has too many characters and not enough plot. When we finally get to the whole conspiracy aspect of this I laughed. I think since this was written in 1986 it made sense to Koontz to write it the way that he did. However, as someone who grew up watching B level monster movies, this is just no comparison at all. This book also indulges in […]
