The World Beyond Your Window

The Girl in the Green Raincoat by Laura Lippman

October 9, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Not anything to argue about with the 11th book following Tess Monaghan. Tess pulls a Hitchcock and after spying on a young woman in a green raincoat realizes she hasn’t seen her for a while and worries that something happened to her. Tess can’t do much investigation in this one, and relies on Whitney, and old friends to track down the young woman and find out what happened to her. The ending was definitely a surprise and I liked the change in direction in Tess’s […]

Needed to be More Twisted

A Whole New World by Liz Braswell

October 9, 2019 by Classic 2 Comments

Well this one was a letdown. I read the twisted tales about Beauty and the Beast and loved how that was set up. This one takes a look at Aladdin and Jasmine and what would have happened if Jafar got to use the lamp and have Genie grant him wishes. I think the biggest problem is that none of the characters feels very developed. There seems to be a side plot with the introduction of two characters (Duban and Morgiana) that held more promise than […]

Buddy Read: Pretty Weak Offering of Old School YA Horror

Help Wanted by Richie Tankersley Cusick

October 7, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Well, this is another one I that I didn’t read when it first came out. I don’t think I would have liked it as a kid either. This book was too all over the place and that ending was a bit odd since I think that Cusick is leaning towards a love triangle or something. Once again this one is more adult than I was thinking of for the time it was written (1993). We have a character threatening to rape the main character a […]

The Movie Was Better

Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane

October 7, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

So this book was okay, but the ending was a letdown especially since when you think about things in a logical way you realize that what was really going on was pretty dumb. The book drags a lot too. The movie managed to move things along quickly with a lot of great imagery. Lehane in this book though makes you go over and over things and you quickly get tired of the investigation. It’s not until the final reveal of things that the book gets […]

Pretty Easy to Figure out Guilty Party & Flow Needed Improved

A Mind to Murder by P.D. James

October 7, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Not too much to say about this one. I thought it was a solid mystery for the second book in the Adam Dalgliesh series. I just found myself getting bored after a while since it was really obvious who the murderer was (at least to me). There are some other secrets that are spilled, but other than a couple of major ones at the end, none of the rest had much to do with anything I thought. I do think the flow could have been […]

Deadly Halloween

Trick or Treat by Richie Tankersley Cusick

October 4, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Wow. Not too much to say except for the most part this was enjoyable. The book drags at times and the character development beyond a few people wasn’t really there, but this was a good representation of young adult horror books from the late 80s/90s. So “Trick or Treat” follows 16 year old Martha. Martha’s father has recently got married and is now moving him and Martha to move in with his new wife and his stepson in the town of Bedford. Martha hates the […]
