Look at Flawed Detectives Taking Place in Denmark

The Tenant by Katrine Engberg

November 5, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. So this was a really good thriller. I have never read a book taking place in Denmark before. Or at least I don’t think I have. It was interesting to see how the partners in this book (Jeppe Korner and Anette Werner) deal with the murder of a young woman and then the twists and turns the murder case takes. We do get to see more of Jeppe […]

Kinsey Moves Settings to Slightly Average Results

N is for Noose by Sue Grafton

November 5, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Not a bad look at Kinsey, just not that interesting I have to say. When Kinsey tends to leave Santa Teresa the story-line often suffers. This one just fell flat to me. I think that is because it’s a lot of Kinsey not putting a lot of stuff together and the ending leaving things up in the air about what happens to someone. I don’t like unresolved story-lines, and this one wasn’t resolved to me. “N is for Noose” has Kinsey agreeing to go and […]

Solid Entry in Cedar Cove Series

44 Cranberry Point by Debbie Macomber

November 5, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

This was just an okay installment in the Cedar Cove series. I thought that Macomber often glossed over really serious issues with no real communication between couples (Cecilia and Ian; Jon and Maryellen) and that the whole mystery with Bob and Peggy was a big washout. It could only have been one person behind the whole thing so color me unsurprised by the reveal. That said, I did enjoy reading about certain events (the bachelor/dog auction was hilarious) and cracked up at Jack and Olivia […]

Terrible Book Supposedly About Travel

Wherever You Go: A Guide to Mindful, Sustainable, and Life-Changing Travel by Daniel Houghton

November 5, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. So I am seriously annoyed by this book. This book was supposed to be a memoir of the former CEO of Lonely Planet, Daniel Houghton that showed how travel changed his life and how it impacts everyone around you. Instead, we have Houghton dancing around what sounds like troublesome parts of his life (somewhere in there he got divorced) and just interviewing the rich and famous in traveler […]

The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie Rubenhold

November 5, 2019 by Classic 2 Comments

What a great book! I don’t know what else to say except Rubenhold does such a great job of giving us a full picture of the five women who were murdered by Jack the Ripper. She goes in the order of the murders, with each section focusing on them from birth to death. She skips over their brutal murders and instead shows us how they lived, how they loved, and how many people were quick to blame these women and in some cases characterize them. […]

Great Look at What Makes a Family

The Family Gift by Cathy Kelly

November 5, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

So the newest by Cathy Kelly really hit home. I thought she did a great job with Freya and Freya’s inner voice, Mildred. I also thought at times Freya was acting so unreasonable and I am glad that the book didn’t hide away from how she was behaving at times. I also am glad that not everything ends up happily ever after with several real life events in Freya’s life. I think with contemporary romances authors often want to make everyone be happy and in […]
