Santa, Please Bring Me a Boyfriend

Santa, Please Bring Me a Boyfriend by Sophie Ranald

November 14, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

You don’t need to read Ranald in order, each of her books can be treated as a stand-alone, but honestly, it makes sense to. You read the first book and it sets up the next character you are going to follow or at least you get glimpses of them. Ranald kind of ran out of room out of the original friend group she was following, so in the last book she jumped to Abbie and Matt. We heard about Abbie’s best friends in that one […]

The Last Party

The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh

November 14, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

Trigger warning: Rape Well this is a new series by Clare Mackintosh. I have either loved or just being meh/okayish about her books. I was glad that this one had an interesting main character that we apparently are going to follow through three books. I enjoyed DC Ffion Morgan and loved how her past experience with the man who is murdered comes full circle by the ending of this one. The man who is murdered, Rhys Lloyd, is a villain you are going to want […]

Blood Roots

Blood Roots by Richie Tankersley Cusick

November 14, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

Trigger warning: Rape and incest Look, I grew up on Flowers in the Attic and this book was TOO MUCH! I maybe screeched a few times. I have usually enjoyed all of Tankersley Cusick’s young adult horror books, but this was just a bridge too far for me. Maybe because the main character was Too Stupid to Live (TSTL). Maybe it was because the secondary characters practically held up “We are Bad People” signs were being ignored by TSTL main character and were also cliche […]

The Rising Tide

The Rising Tide by Ann Cleeves

November 14, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

I started getting into the Vera Stanhope novels after the great tv series (you can watch on Acorn via Amazon if you are in the U.S.). I felt a bit disappointed by some of the earlier books because they were a slog to get through. But with the latest installments, this Vera still seems someone similar to the tv series one and also separate at times. Unlike in the tv series, the book series still has Joe and Holly working for Vera. All I have […]

I Choose Darkness

I Choose Darkness by Jenny Lawson

November 8, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

This was  hilarious short story by Jenny Lawson. Her holiday essay even though the cover shows an elf with bat wings, is about Halloween. I think at one point I started laughing so hard I could feel my side giving. I have read some of Lawson’s other memoirs, and she has a great style. Her childhood always sounds bonkers. And this one gives her insight on being raised in the middle of nowhere during Halloween. The passage about she and her sister going Trick or […]

Getaway Short Story Collection

Uncharted Waters by Sally Hepworth

His Happy Place by Zakiya Dalila Harris

Stockholm by Catherine Steadman

Belle Mar by Luanne Rice

Catch Her in a Lie by Jess Lourey

Shell Game by Rumaan Alam

November 8, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

So I read through all of the “Getaway” collection the other day and thought some stories hit harder than others. Per usual, here’s my rating per story in the collection. “Uncharted Waters” by Sally Hepworth (3 stars)-Yeah this one shocked me too. Probably because I have pretty much loved most of Hepworth’s mystery novels set in Australia. This one is also set in Australia, but follows a married woman named Ella who is going on a cruise without her husband Mac. While on the cruise […]
