How To Make a Husband

Husband Material by Emily Belden

March 13, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. This book will be released on September 24, 2019.  I feel a bit sad. The potential with this book was pretty high, it’s just that Belden ended up having a main character who wasn’t that likable and also the romance felt forced. “Husband Material” follows 29 year old Charlotte Rosen. A New York transplant, Charlotte initially worked in a different field than what she does now. Charlotte works […]

What happens to a dream deferred?

Dapper Dan: Made in Harlem by Daniel R. Day

March 13, 2019 by Classic 4 Comments

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. This book will be released on July 9, 2019.  What happens to a dream deferred?       Does it dry up       like a raisin in the sun?       Or fester like a sore—       And then run?       Does it stink like rotten meat?       Or crust and sugar over—       like a syrupy sweet?       Maybe it just sags       like a heavy load. Or does it explode? Langston Hughes Wow. So it’s funny that I […]

Dating is Exhausting!

How to Hack a Heartbreak by Kristin Rockaway

March 13, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. This book will be released on July 30, 2019.  Well this was downright delightful. I really got a kick out of Rockway’s book and the characters she introduced in this one. Besides the main character of Mel, she has some really awesome best friends (Whitney, Lia, and Dani) and a great roommate (Vanessa). I loved the book taking a look at women who are very good at coding (like […]

Wonderful Look at Magic in Germany

The October Man by Ben Aaronovitch

March 8, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this via NetGalley. This did not affect my reviews or rating. This book will be released on March 31, 2019.  So this was pretty cool. Instead of following Peter or Nightingale (why???) we follow another magic practitioner named Tobias Winter. Tobias is the equivalent to our Peter Grant in England, only Tobias operates in Germany. Tobias is working on a case that seems to involve wine, ghosts, and magic. Tobias’s family seemed very interesting and I wanted to know more […]

Not the Best Monroe Book I Have Read

Skyward by Mary Alice Monroe

March 8, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Honestly this one didn’t work when you focused on the adult characters. There was also a wise old black man helping out the white people around him and that didn’t sit that well with me either. I think the biggest issue is that Harris was selfish about everything and Ella should have stayed professional. The characters of Elijah, Brady, and Clarice are the only parts of the book I enjoyed reading about. Monroe backed off on incorporating Brady into more of the story and I […]

Clunky and Unrealistic

Phantom Prey by John Sandford

March 8, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Ehhh. I didn’t really like this one. It’s a strong 3 star book, but the whole thing with the character of Fairy just didn’t work for me. It actually took away from the first plot (who murdered Alyssa Austin’s daughter and why). And though Sandford delays showing us what is going on until the 60 percent or so mark, I found myself losing interest after the reveal and just wanting to finish the book already. Usually Lucas has two cases to follow and in this […]
