Marriage, Convent, or Freedom?

The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden

March 29, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

What a wonderful continuation of the “Winternight Trilogy” by Katherine Arden. We don’t only follow Vaysa in this one, we follow her brother and sister. We also get a couple of appearances from the fallen priest from book #1 and even more insight into Morozko. I wanted to see what the future held for Vasya and the Winter King and now in part two we get to follow Vasya after she rejects a typical life for freedom on the road with her stallion Solovey. Unfortunately, […]

Sophomore Slump?

The Everlasting Rose by Dhonielle Clayton

March 25, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Honestly I am always worried when a debut author puts their second book out. I always worry that I am comparing it too much to the first. However, since the first book by Clayton was the first book in this series, I can’t help but compare it. And I have to say that the second book didn’t work for me at all. I was bored and just kept waiting for something (anything to happen). This book didn’t expand the world the reader had found out […]

Following Three Women on Their 30th, 40th, and 50th Birthdays

The Year That Everything Changed by Cathy Kelly

March 25, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Well this was ultimately a delightful read. I really got a kick out of following Ginger, Sam, and Callie. I thought it was an odd writing choice that had Kelly go back one month before their birthdays and then jump forward again. Other than that, I enjoyed this book and found Ginger to be the character that I felt for and wanted to read more about. That said, I still enjoyed the characters of Sam and Callie. “The Year Everything Changed” follows  Ginger, Sam, and […]

Apparently I Am All About the Grudges

The Family Next Door by Sally Hepworth

March 25, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Sigh. How to talk about this book. I can’t say much without giving away spoilers. But I can say this at least. The ending was eye-roll inducing and not believable at all. Also having the baker’s dozen of characters made it hard to follow anything that was happening with everyone in this book. Some plots don’t connect together until Hepworth tries to force fit things here and there. I started to skim some chapters because I just wanted to get to the end of the […]

That’s Not How Social Anxiety Works

Suddenly Single by Carol Wyer

March 25, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. This book will be released on April 8, 2019.  So this book ended up being a disappointment. I was all ready to read about a woman that is dealing with a separation and finding herself single after many years as part of a couple. Instead there were a whole host of other things happening in this book that in the end didn’t work together for me. Most was […]

Not Needed for Series

Beach House Memories by Mary Alice Monroe

March 25, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Spoilers for those who have not read Beach House #1 and Swimming Lessons otherwise known as Beach House #2). I ultimately felt bored and slightly letdown by the third book in the series. I honestly considered just passing it up since I am not a fan of reading about affairs in romance novels. Between that and how Lovie honestly seemed to ignore her two kids for her “romance” I wasn’t feeling the plot at all. And when Monroe showed how and why Lovie ended up […]
