I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

Mothers and Daughters and Meh

March 24, 2016 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Alice Hoffman is one of my favorite authors, so I was eager to tackle this one, and yet, meh. Two mothers, one who put her daughter up for adoption and has carried the secret with her (Lila), and one who is facing an unplanned pregnancy (Rae) have their lives interwoven through serendipitous means. This is a tale of tragedy, hope, and forgiveness, and how small missteps can irrevocably change the lives of our protagonists, and those around them. Magical realism is usually my jam, but […]

Memoir. Fashion. Not for me.

March 4, 2016 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This was the March pick of my book club and I went into it with much trepidation.  I don’t read a lot of memoirs, and I don’t care about fashion sooo take what I say with those grains of salt.  I did NOT like this book.  Here is the paragraph that I have selected to illustrate the reasons I didn’t like it. “Despite all the drama, the photograph he took of Tina lounging on the sofa surrounded by parasols was not modern at all. He […]

Go North, Young Hippie

February 25, 2016 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I read Tortilla Curtain previously and thought it was a solid novel, so was excited to pick up another book by Boyle, and one that was recommended from my favorite podcast, Literary Disco. If I had to describe Boyle’s writing in one word it would be “unrelenting.”  His style can feel like a bit of a slog, but he is a compelling storyteller who shines a light on sub-groups that I don’t often read about, so for me it has felt like I learned a lot […]

Treacly Secrets of the Been There, Done That Sisterhood

January 30, 2016 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I received this book as a gift either the Christmas before last, or my last birthday, and decided it was time to check it off the old to do list.  I have read other books by Rebecca Wells a while ago (8ish years?) and remember enjoying them.  She is the author of “Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood” which is part of the “Ya Ya series” that made the rounds in popular culture and was turned into a feature film in the early 2000s. […]

Premise of US orphan history: awesome. Book: less awesome.

January 30, 2016 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

This was the first selection of the new year for my book club, chosen somewhat for length, something short to start off the year, and because there were book club questions in the back of the book. I have picked books to read for worse reasons, so away we went.  Though fiction, this book is the fictionally telling of what to me was an unknown part of American history From 1854 to 1929, orphan children in New York were placed on trains by a group […]

Mirror Mirror on the wall, who is this dead person and why does she have my face?!

January 13, 2016 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I received this book as one of my CBR Exchange gifts from The Chancellor (thank you!!) and was delighted to receive it.  It has become a nice tradition as I received the first in the series as part of my exchange gift last year.  Whereas it took me about a year to open the first one, this was not the case the second time around, and it was my first book of the new year because I knew what I was in for: compelling and excellent […]
