I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

This one is for the English majors.

Due to the tastes of my book club, I have read more non-fiction and more memoirs this year.  Some haven’t worked out for me (fashion. No thank you) but this one faired much better.  As is probably common for a reader, I was an English major in college and so this book, about grammar and the life of Mary Norris, The New Yorker copy editor was compelling thought it was a slow start. A slooooow start.  Also, if you are an audiobook person, members of my […]

Amy Poehler – Funny Lady, Spirit Animal, A-mah-zing

July 12, 2016 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Loved it so much, this is my second time around listening, and it was just as delightful as the first. If you like Amy Poehler, you need to read it. I’d recommend this book for just about anyone, as it is laugh out loud funny and very relatable. I’m not a parent, but I still was able to enjoy her stories of pregnancy and motherhood, not just for the insight they gave me into Poehler, but to the insight they give into the human experience. […]

Welcome to the island of misfit (or taxidermied) toys.

A friend of mind introduced me to the weird and zany humor and darkness that is Jenny Lawson in her first book and I’ve been an avid blog reader ever since. I was excited for the new book, but my friend was less enthused about it so I went into it with tempered expectations. Overall, the book worked but I think I like her more in blog form. I think this book is best enjoyed if you reads few chapters, put it down, and come […]

The Truest of True Crime, predecessor to everything

June 23, 2016 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

I had heard of In Cold Blood because of its resonance in popular culture, as it is considered to be a true crime masterpiece, if not THE best true crime book ever written.  My favorite podcast “Literary Disco” did an episode on some Capote stories, which jogged my memory that I had never tackled this classic, and I decided to make this one a goal for the year.  I “read” this via audiobook, and I highly recommend both that format, and the book. In 1959 a well known […]

The Seinfeld of Sci-Fi – The Time Travel Book about Nothing

June 1, 2016 by cheerbrarian 4 Comments

I don’t have a lot of time for a robust review, so I’ll sum up some of my thoughts up, list style. I’m not a regular science fiction reader.  I like action, and character development.  If you like all the parts in “Lord of the Rings” where they are walking and not a lot is happening, this book is for you. I liked a lot of the elements of this book (time travel as commonplace, dual timelines, misdirection and mystery, historical context) but altogether I […]

1980s + Real Characters = Young Adult Perfection

May 9, 2016 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Now we are talking!  This was the book club pick for the month of May, and after the letdown (created by moi) over one of Elmore Leonard’s not so good novels Djibouti, I was hoping for a winner.  Luckily someone else had a great suggestion waiting in the wings, as they had just finished reading Eleanor & Park.  And how fitting, that I finished this book at the tail end of #IReadYAWeek – bonus! This is a book about love, and heartache, and growing up, […]
