I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

When you didn’t hate the book, but can’t think of the title: a meh-ish review.

December 6, 2016 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This was the last book of the book club I started in my local area. Aaaaand I read it over a month ago, so my memory is fuzzy, so this review isn’t going to be one for the record books. The book was recommended to me by a few folks, plus it was set it Italy, where I had just returned from a trip, so it seemed like a no brainer to tackle it next. All in all, I found it serviceable, but I just […]

Not my favorite Irving, but still a good one

October 20, 2016 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

I have been reading this book since January.  I had also picked it up and put it down again as early as 2012.  And today (or yesterday rather) I sit before you finally victorious!  I was a big fan of “World According to Garp” and enjoyed “A Prayer for Own Meany,” but for some reason, this read was just like taking my medicine.  I wanted to do it, I knew it was good for me, and I did it, but I didn’t particularly enjoy the […]

Have you heard about my goddess and savior, Marie Kondo?

October 20, 2016 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

This is my ev-e-ry-thing. I know I”m a little late to the game, as Kondo was named one of Time’s most influential people of 2015, but I have drank the kool-aid and am ALL in with her method, her process, and her book. Is thinking about “tidying” as magical make me feel a little silly? Sure. But I cannot stand clutter so this book speaks to me. Full disclosure: I’m a pretty organized person, so I get excited in general about organizing, but I think […]

Not with a vampire bang, but with a supe whimper

October 4, 2016 by cheerbrarian 4 Comments

This is the 13th and final installment in the Southern Vampire Mystery Series, aka, the True Blood books. Sometimes, you finish a series and you are left wanting more. This was not one of those times. These have been my beach books, my brain candy, and I have enjoyed them for what they are, but the thrill was gone by the end of the book. After so long in Sookie’s world the characters have become predictable, as have the plot lines. Or, when there is […]

Debut Novel: Must Read if you dig character development and SVU

September 20, 2016 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This book was on my radar because Tod of the “Literary Disco” podcast, of which I am so fond, would not stop talking about it. It was his favorite book of 2014 so I convinced by book club it was a good pick for July, cuz you know, July. They were hoping for something light and fun. Sorry people. Henderson’s debut novel is masterfully written. The story begins with Pete, a social worker in Montana trying to defuse a violent situation between a mother and […]

Leonard: the man

August 12, 2016 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

After Djibouti I needed some classic Leonard to get me back on track as a fan. The aforementioned novel was one of his last, and is quite the slog, so I was eager to give him another go as I am enamored with his characters as I have seen them in the hit show “Justified.” Get Shorty, later made into the film starring Travolta, is a hoot and a half. I am always a fan of mobsters (I adore Casino, Goodfellas, etc) and a touch […]
