I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

Star-crossed lovers + war + assassins = A graphic “graphic novel”

May 26, 2017 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I am no stranger to the amazingness of Brian K. Vaughan.  I loved both “Y: The Last Man” and “Runaways” so when a friend offered to loan me “Saga” I was on board.  I enjoy graphic novels but don’t frequent shops or seek them out regularly, so I know I’m a bit late to the game (the new volume was just released) but better late than never!  And of course, I love this series just as much as the previous two. This is definitely a […]

Modern Fairytale. Race Relations. Intriguing premise, flat execution.

May 26, 2017 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Ohhhhh boy.  This book.  This was the last pick of the local library book club of the year, and it was much anticipated.  It has received much acclaim, NPR said great things about it, and but for me, and my book club, it widely missed the mark.  It was NOT loved.  Or liked even.  At this club we (about 16 folks) go around the room and give a score to a scale of 5 and this one didn’t even get past three.  And there were a […]

Clever unforgettable post 9/11 tale, from the “other” side

May 3, 2017 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

With all that is going on in our world, and specifically in our country due to the orange baboon in charge, my friend and I decided we wanted to do something to educate ourselves, specifically regarding Muslim people.  Sort of a “fight the piles of ignorance with education” personal growth assignment.  I came across an article via lithub that gave 10 contemporary books to read, so we both took a look.  She narrowed down the list to a few, and then I made the final call. […]

Natural Disaster, Unnatural Consequences in the Big Easy

May 3, 2017 by cheerbrarian 3 Comments

This is a book I wouldn’t have turned to, left to my own devices, but it was a favorite of the crew of my favorite literary podcast, “Literary Disco” so I filed it away and planned to check it out via audio.  Non-fiction is not my preferred genre, and for me is often a bit of a slog, so I figured the audio format would get me through it, and keep me honest and not skimming passages.  As it was I cranked it up to […]

The Bloat Between Oceans

April 20, 2017 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

**Sort of spoilery review, because I have things I need to say.** I picked up this book as it was the April pick for my local library book club, of which I am a new member. I put it off because I knew this was not my kind of book. I had heard of the film adaptation and scene the trailers, and it seemed like a good movie, just not my kind of movie. I am not one for pain, and this movie (and book) […]

Good skin care, if you care

April 9, 2017 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This book isn’t exactly my normal fair, it was a book club selection of the Chicago chapter of Slow Food. Essentially, Slow Food is the opposite of fast food: processed and unfamiliar in origin. Slow Food is about food that is good, clean, and fair. Not necessarily healthy food, but the main principles are that it is important to know where your food comes and attempt to preserve important cultural food traditions. Anyhoo, this book doesn’t have anything to do with food really, but it […]
