I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

Shakespearean satire. Not my favorite, but not Moore’s fault – he rules.

September 1, 2017 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

Christopher Moore is one of my top five favorite authors. I first discovered him when I read “Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal,” the imaginative and satirical fictional account of the life of Jesus Christ, the years that are missing from the Bible.  It’s actually my favorite book, which I will disclose depending on the audience.  (If I don’t think they’ll have the sense of awareness to appreciate it, then I go with 1984, which is a close second). I reread his […]

Looking for a real Debbie Downer? Look no further.

Boy oh boy.  I came across this book as a recommendation from my favorite literary podcast, “Literary Disco.” The author is a friend of one of the contributors, and he mentioned it and it sounded interesting, a sort of dark tale of an unsatisfied house wife, so I added it to my audiobook queue months ago and just now got around to listening to it as part of my commute/walk routine. It was, interesting, to say the least.  I’ll let this quote from Time magazine […]

Big Suspense, Big Time Fun, Little Criticism

August 8, 2017 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

It has been a bit since I was absolutely OBSESSED with a story, and finding out whodunnit, but Big Little Lies captured me from head to toe. I went into the novel knowing of the successful HBO miniseries and seeing trailers with competitive women jogging on the beach, and I wasn’t sure it was my cup of tea but I listened to the bajillion ladies I know who said, “OMG READ THIS BOOK” and they were all correct. Firstly, and importantly, I did this on […]

Epic (by the actual definition of the word) Sweeping Tale of Mythical Proportions

July 12, 2017 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Boy oh boy. I finally made it! I finished East of Eden! It had been a while since I sunk my teeth into a beast of a book, and I set my sights on this heavy sucker. I think it was because I was going to tackle the Grapes of Wrath but my local library didn’t have it in stock, so I went for the behemoth, clocking in at 601 pages. It took renewing it twice, and um, checking it out twice, but I prevailed! […]

Love 80s movies? (Mostly) love this book.

July 7, 2017 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Hadley Freeman is a writer who has a love for 80s movies that is unparalleled by anyone I have known in real life.  She feels about the genre like I feel about a select few (specifically, Dirty Dancing and Steel Magnolias, so I was over the moon they each had their own chapters) and does an excellent job giving insight both into individual films, as well as the landscape of cinema in the 1980s.  And she does so with great humor, in depth personal self-reflection, […]

The SAGA continues (had to use the pun once).

June 3, 2017 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Where we last left off, our intrepid star-crossed lovers had just been joined by Marko’s parents…awkward.  Things get off to a rocky start as mom leaves with Marko to try to recover their ghost nanny (this story is just so fun to write about!) and dad is left with Alana, who is suspicious of him, to say the least.  But luckily, their tree spaceship has got her back, and he ends up a little…tied up (pun totally intended). Meanwhile, the unlucky in love mercenary, unlucky […]
