I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

My last review of 2017: a stark end to a stark year – Sing, Unburied, Sing

December 23, 2017 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Firstly, let me toot my horn for a moment.  I set a goal this year to read 34 books and this is my 34th review.  (Insert trumpeting sounds). Huzzah! Now, on to the book. I saw this book posted on the CBR Facebook page as part of a combo review of book award winners from a fellow Cannonballer.  During a brief stop into the library I saw it on the new books shelf and though I did not judge a book by its cover I […]

Tana French – READ HER BOOKS. PLEASE NOTE THE CAPS. I REALLY MEAN IT.

Broken Harbor (Dublin Murder Squad, #4) by Tana French

December 21, 2017 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

This is the fourth of Tana French’s gripping “Dublin Murder Squad” series and I cannot get enough.  When someone asks for book recommendations she is always at the top of my list.  I don’t know if it is a fair comparison, but I say that if you have ever enjoyed an episode of any iteration of Law and Order you will like this book, and the whole series. To be accurate, her books aren’t your traditional “Law and Order” whodunnit format, but rather one of […]

My most reread book: Christmas time with a dumb angel in California – hijinks ensue

December 12, 2017 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

And this is now my 6th read of this funny little book! I missed last year due to moving, and thought maybe I didn’t want to read it again, as this is by far the most I have ever reread one book. But, with the holidays in a place with actual winter, I longed for something a little tropical. This time I changed it up and did the audio version and I HIGHLY recommend it! Sometimes an audio version will detract from a book, or […]

The finest Hallmark movie in book format. A big warm bowl of predictability.

November 26, 2017 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

I am two for two with the local library book club this year in finding the book selection to be subpar.  In fact, I am on the fence whether I liked this one, or Everything I Never Told You the least.  This one was just predictable and eyeroll worthy, whereas the other made me downright angry, so I think The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend will land the distinction of being not quite as bad as the book I liked least this year. Sara Lundqvist is […]

Exit onto Revolutionary Road for bleak amazingness

November 6, 2017 by cheerbrarian 4 Comments

I recently reconnected with a good friend of days gone by, and we started chatting books, which led to shipping books to each other, and he sent this one along as one of his favorites.  I had a vague memory of the movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, never having seen it, just aware of its existence, but wasn’t familiar with the story in the least.  I had my friends stellar recommendation to go on and was confident I would like it, but did […]

Dreamy Murder on the Orient Express

October 26, 2017 by cheerbrarian 3 Comments

A friend of mine and I were discussing spooky books, something fitting for October and the season of Halloween. We both have read a preponderance of Stephen King, and she came up with this book as something on her “to read” list that could fit the bill.  I read plenty of Agatha Christie back in the day, though only Miss Marple, so Hercule Poirot was a new venture for me. It is worth noting that I went the audio route for this book, which was […]
