I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

Where’d You Go Bernadette – What took me so long??

Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple

April 7, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

For some reason, this book languished in my “to read” pile for quite some time. I can’t quite explain it, but I found something about the cover to be off-putting, and didn’t think I was going to like it. As the old adage goes though, judging by a cover is problematic, and I found this book to be utterly engrossing and delightful. Once I finally picked it up, I was hooked. A really unique story, told creatively, with rich and vibrant characters. And so so […]

The Kind Worth Killing – A Thriller Worth Reading

The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson

April 5, 2019 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

I am no stranger to a thriller, I love a good murder mystery. I was looking for book recommendations to make me feel better about present stress in my life (i.e., when I am stressed, reading about murder makes me feel better because at least I’m not being murdered) and picked this one up on the recommendation of a friend and am delighted to give it two big ol’ thumbs up. This is a book I was delighted and surprised by, so much so that […]

Becoming – Be my friiiiiiiend, Michelle

Becoming by Michelle Obama

March 15, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Let me just put this shocker out there: I voted for Obama. Big fan. However, I am not the most politically involved so I wasn’t tuned in to all the goings on of his administration, and also, would not say I had a strong opinion of Michelle Obama. I found her to be a classy lady, and envy her super toned arms, but by and large wasn’t focused on her at all during her eight years in the White House. Her book has been heralded […]

The Library Book – A love letter to libraries

The Library Book by Susan Orlean

March 3, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This book came into my sight line during voting for the Goodreads “best of 2018” awards and I bookmarked it to read, jumped in the queue at my local library and promptly forgot all about it. When it became available it was a delightful companion to Bird Box (in that, it was not horrifying) and I enjoyed this glimpse into the world of the library, that is so very dear to my own heart. Reminiscent of Devil in the White City in narrative style, but […]

Bird Box – The Post-Apocalyptic Book that Dreams (Nightmares) Are Made of

Bird Box by Josh Malerman

March 3, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I discovered this book all on my own, a little unknown unassuming book at the library. (Jk. This book is everywhere). Unless you’ve been gone in some remote location you have heard of this book, or at least, heard of the Netflix movie of the same name, starring America’s favorite FBI beauty contestant, the delightful Sandra Bullock. Sandra is having a pretty bad time though, in his post-apocalyptic dystopian nightmare, where the sight of something, some unknown creature, drives people almost instantly mad and violent […]

Heartland – Heartbreaking and thoughtful in America’s Heartland

Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth by Sarah Smarsh

February 18, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This is yet another great read I “discovered” via ANUW, the Association of Northwestern University Women book club that I am a member of, by way of my employment at Northwestern University. I was a little leery, as last year the book club selections were pretty heavy to include J.D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy. At first thought, his book has many parallels to hers, so I wasn’t that interested in reading more of the same. Vance of Elegy grew up in rural Appalachia and details the […]
