I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

CBRBingo – Summer Read. More Poehler, please.

Yes Please by Amy Poehler

August 13, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

CBRBingo – Summer Read Reread July 2019 (third review). As I again turn to Amy Poehler in the summer (last time, was summer 2016) I would definitely call this the quintessential summer read. Great on the beach, fun and funny, Poehler is a rollicking good time. Aside from George Orwell’s 1984 and my annual Christopher Reading of “The Stupidest Angel” this is the only other book I have reread since I was a kid. It is equal parts memoir and self-help and Poehler is a […]

CBRBingo – Far and Away. An epic that is truly epic.

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee

July 29, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I have been waiting a loooooong while for this book to get into my eager hands. A work friend extolled its virtues and it is the September book club pick for one of the clubs I’m in AND I figured it would be good for any number of bingo squares. I went with Far and Away because both the geographical and cultural differences from where I’m sitting in the American Midwest to rural Korea in the 1900s are expansive. While I was reading it, I […]

CBRBingo – Own Voices. If you know anyone with the rally cry of “send her back” give them this book.

Exit West by Mohsin Hamid

July 28, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – Own Voices This is my second read of Mohsin Hamid, having read “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” last year. He was not on my radar except for the intentional choice to read outside of my standard zone, by way of fighting ignorance (looking at you, Drumpf) with education. I came across an article via lithub (http://lithub.com/10-contemporary-nov…) that gave 10 contemporary books to read, and a friend and I decided to tackle “The Reluctant Fundamentalist.” It was interesting, surprising, heartfelt, and disheartening. It put a […]

CBRBingo – True Story. Taylor Swift has NOTHING on Holmes

Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou

July 9, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: True Story What. A. Mesmerizing. Mess.  I had only the most basic cliff noted exposure to the complete cluster that is Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos, but like many things, the truth is indeed stranger than fiction. This is so cartoonish an outlandish tale that it seems to be an almost “ripped from the headlines” Law and Order style exposition: ready your popcorn, for this juicy and awful tale of lies and the downfall of genius in the healthcare industry. Carreyrou is an impeccable […]

CBRBingo – The Collection. Stark, Interesting, Confusing (so, T.C. Boyle)

The Relive Box and Other Stories by T.C. Boyle

July 9, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – The Collection   Short stories have recently become one of my favorite genres to tackle. There is something delightful about being able to, in one short sitting, devour a whole tale, a microcosm of a world and characters as a quick bite. Certainly this taps into my need for achievement, checking something off the never-ending to do list: progress is charted quickly and swiftly. Also, I have a bit of a reverence for short story authors, for how they are able to […]

CBRBingo – I LOVE THIS. Practically Delightful

The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman

July 8, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – I LOVE THIS This is the first time I am participating in Cannonball Read Bingo and I am ALL IN BABY. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to swing a blackout by the end of October but my personal goal is to fill out the whole thing by the end of the year. Let’s do this thing! And what fun to review Alice Hoffman for my first Bingo pick! She has been one of my favorite authors since high school and […]
