I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

CBRBingo – Banned Books. THUG Life = Real life

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

September 28, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

The fact this is a banned book makes me annoyed. Banning it for language, for violence because you don’t think youth should be exposed to that? Okaaaay. I mean, the world is violent but I am aware and intentional of what media and entertainment I let my kid consume, so fine. But banning it for BEING ANTI-COP??? THAT IS MISSING THE ENTIRE POINT OF THOMAS’ BOOK, and SIDING WITH RACISM. So, when I saw the Banned Book square in CBR Bingo, I knew just what […]

CBRBingo – Illustrated. A delightful romp

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

September 28, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Recently I was singing, well, really, yelling, the praises of the reboot of She-ra: Princesses of Power and its creator Noelle Stevenson on my Facespace page. Many like-minded folks also sung along. Someone commented asking if I had read Lumberjanes (I had) and Nimona (I had not) so here we are! Brief aside: if you like things that are awesome, you should read the Lumberjanes and watch She-ra. I binged through She-ra on a sick day and I have zero regrets about it. Stevenson creates […]

CBRBingo – Science! Not new science, but new-ish to me

Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch

September 22, 2019 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

This review was last edited on August 26th. I don’t know why it was such a long road to get here, but for those of my CBR pals who also have taken five-ever to review a book, you are not alone! So, here I go, nearly a month later, imma REVIEW THE HECK OUTTA THIS BOOK. Ahem. As I was saying. This book is probably not a typical one you’ll see in the bingo category for “science” but the science of nutrition and food is […]

CBRBingo – Remix. Mrs. Holmes puts the original to shame.

Mrs. Sherlock Holmes: The True Story of New York City's Greatest Female Detective and the 1917 Missing Girl Case That Captivated a Nation by Brad Ricca

August 25, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo is really the gift that keeps on giving! I struggle a little with the framework I’ve applied to my reading at present as I try to knock out squares, but without Bingo and CBR I wouldn’t have found Mrs. Sherlock Holmes and that would have been a real tragedy. I wanted to get CBR Bingo Remix square and wasn’t ready to tackle more Laurie R. King. Read the first one and was on board for the first 3/4 of the book but didn’t […]

CBRBingo – Birthday. A Little Lagniappe

Gumbo Life: Tales from the Roux Bayou by Ken Wells

August 25, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – Birthday! I don’t think I’m alone in this, but at the launch of CBR Bingo I already had a few books in the queue so I am doing what I can to find space on the bingo card for them, at times having to pull off a bit of a shoehorn situation. And thus, I discovered the Ken Wells’ birthday was August 5th. BOOM. SQUARED. Also, after reading this book, I sent the following Facebook message to the author. No response yet, […]

CBRBingo – Rainbow Flag. Laugh out loud funny

I'm Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves by Ryan O'Connell

August 14, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – Rainbow Flag Ryan O’Connell is a gay man with mild cerebral palsy that was hit by a car, hired as a writer for Thought Catalog, had a drug problem, and now has successfully published a book telling the sordid, thoughtful and funny details of his life. And, even better news for him, is that this book was adapted as a show on Netflix, which premiered in April. I couldn’t imagine a better pick for Rainbow Flag as his identity (including his sexuality) […]
