I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle

Okay. Honesty time. I am trying to wrest a full cannonball from the jaws of defeat. Once I get this review written I’m at 48, I’m halfway through reading one book and 7/8 through tackling another on audio so that’s got me at 50 which is SO. CLOSE. So, I picked up Wrinkle in Time partially to get another one in the W column; however, I am hoping/trying to get my ten-year-old to read it (and the quintet) because duh, awesome. I threw the word […]

Summer Days…of privilege, learning, and growth

No Ivy League by Hazel Newlevant

December 17, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I really want to be the kind of person that listens to NPR. It’s an elusive goal of mine that remains so, I have tried and I just can’t do it. I tell myself it’s because I can’t stand starting in the middle of something, so jumping to that dial on my commute is an ill prospect but I’m grasping at straws. I just have come to understand that I’m not that kind of grown up. However, my husband is a big fan, so legally […]

Purpose vs Vocation vs Career vs What Am I Doing?

The Purpose Path: A Guide to Pursuing Your Authentic Life's Work by Nicholas Pearce

December 17, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I presently work at Kellogg School of Management which is the business school at Northwestern University. As such, we have access to top rated faculty and have opportunities to see them present their work at lunch events and the like. It’s a pretty neat built-in professional development opportunity. As such, Dr. Pearce presented an event for staff the other day. Though I wasn’t able to attend, I did find out from colleagues that they received free books and I was like WHAT. FREE BOOK?! Luckily, […]

Cuddle up by the fire, and maybe phone a friend?

The Friend by Sigrid Nunez

December 16, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This is a little (224) book that packs a real punch. I’m always intrigued to jump into a National Book Award Winner and when I saw this on my library book club “to read” for next year, and as I struggle to climb the peak of my cannonball, I saw a win/win opportunity to get this one checked off. If you judge a cook by its cover and see a swell dog, fun covers, and a sweet title you are going to be sorely disappointed. […]

Paltrow or Silverstone for me, please, but not my literary jam.

Emma by Jane Austen

December 16, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Okay. Confession time – I have never like the Bronte Sisters or Austen. If I were to analyze it’s because of two reasons. 1. Slooooooooow pacing. I like books with a bit more get-up-and go. 2. As a former English major, I felt like I was “supposed to” like these books, particularly because I was a girl, and in my youth I was a contrarian and determined NOT to like what other people did and yes I was probably exhausting about it. So, I wasn’t […]

I still can’t believe I told the internet I was reading this book.

Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence by Esther Perel

December 2, 2019 by cheerbrarian 3 Comments

So, um, it is a big deal for me that I put this on my digital book shelf. And a big deal that I read it. On the one hand, reading it made sense because when there is something I want to learn about I tend to turn to a book, but reading something with the word “erotic” in the title makes me heckin’ uncomfortable. Yet, here we are. As I focus on my wellness (in all regards) I was looking to learn more about […]
