I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

Kristy's Great Idea (Baby-Sitters Club #1) by Ann M. Martin

April 21, 2020 by cheerbrarian 5 Comments

In this, the time of corona, some people are killing time by embarking on new hobbies. I’m a proud member of the sourdough nation, i.e., those weirdoughs (bread pun!) making homemade starter and bread. I’ve gotten back into adult coloring and, relevant to this review, I’ve taken up reading the first novels of the Babysitters-club books on Facebook live. You miiiiight wonder how exactly I got to here. My favorite podcast, Literary Disco, is doing their part to raise spirits by cranking out more episodes […]

The Nix by Nathan Hill

April 14, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

As I saw the saw my Goodreads Reading challenge accusatorily tell me how many books I am behind right now (6!!) I panic searched for something I could do via audio while going on my many social distancing walks. This came up on my local library app as “available now” and a cursory search showed me that folks I like had it in their to read piles, so on I went. Once again, I found myself unknowingly entering a book set in Chicago (where I […]

Snap, Crackle, but no Pop

Vampires in the Lemon Grove by Karen Russell

April 14, 2020 by cheerbrarian 3 Comments

As I am catching up on reviews, it surprised me to remember that I read this. And I read it just last month. That gives you immediate insight into the impression it made, which was weak. I’ve gotten into short stories in the past few years, starting with T.C. Boyle and falling for the vocal recitations by LeVar Burton. I have read some great collections but this one for me was a dud. My experience seems to be similar to many on Goodreads which is […]

Baby’s First Romance Novel!

Dreaming of You (The Gamblers of Craven's, #2) by Lisa Kleypas

April 14, 2020 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

So I’m three reviews behind here in the time of corona. Just couldn’t get around to doing them. Plus, I’m staring my reading challenge in the face as it is passing me by, since it is hard to focus on reading AND I no longer of the long commute (yay) wherein I would plow through audiobooks (blerp). Just me? Yeah. Probably just me…(jk. You are not alone!) But, I stand (okay, sit) before you, ready to tackle these three and get back on it. Speaking […]

Ms. Tartt, you did well with the latitude you were given.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

March 15, 2020 by cheerbrarian 3 Comments

Y’ALL. I DID IT. I FINALLY DID IT. I READ, IN IT’S ENTIRELY, DONNA TARTT’S GOLDFINCH. ALL 784 PAGES. For the most part, Cannonball Read is a great thing for me. It’s introduced me to a network of cool people, I better remember the things I’ve read (having reviewed them), and keeps me accountable to a goal. But, the goal bit is a tricky business. With an eye on the prize of a full cannonball it can seem a bit foolhardy to tackle a loooong […]

It’s the end of the world as they knew it

Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by Erik Larson

March 15, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I’m a new-er fan of Erik Larson. I read Devil in the White City only last year (or last last year?) which makes me unique in these parts, these parts being the Chicagoland area. That book details the creation of the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, as well as the horrific serial killings by H.H. Holmes during that time period, and it is compelling. It’s pretty much required reading here, much like (shudder) Kate Chopin’s The Awakening in Louisiana which I read, I dunno, 5 […]
