I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

If You’re Not a Good Listener, This Could Help

You're Not Listening: What You're Missing and Why It Matters by Kate Murphy

May 30, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Once again, my pals (in my head, not pals as far as they know) Rider, Julia and Tod of the bestest book podcast in the land, Literary Disco, have brought onto my radar that I a) didn’t know about b) wanted to read c) needed to read d) really liked. What more could you ask? I am the first to say I’m not a very good listener. I mean, other people have likely said it, but I probably didn’t hear them #listeningjoke I have been […]

Lady Spies Rule

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn

May 29, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I grabbed this book during my last in-person visit to the library where I was panic grabbing books to stock up prior to the closure. I’ve been a big fan of Reese’s book club and dove back to the beginning: this was the second of her picks (I had already read and enjoyed her first pick, “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.” This book was interesting but took a lot for me to get through, which I think was a combo of it’s hard to focus […]

Claudia and the Story of Boys Will be Boys

Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls by Ann M. Martin

May 29, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Boy oh boy am I behind in my reviews! Whatever could be distracting me? Pandemic perhaps?? I have it in my head that I shouldn’t be reading new books until I’ve reviewed the old ones which is causing some counter productivity but NO MAS. Gonna get these down and raise my head high. I’m not typically one for YA or youth books, but decided in this time of chaos to pick up a new hobby, specifically, read the Baby-sitters Club books on Facebook Live to […]

Olive, Again (Again)

May 12, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

A perusal of my library’s digital audiobook library lead me to this book as it was in the “available now/hot commodity” bucket. This book is a sequel to Olive Kitteridge and I thought I remembered liking it, so I dove in. After scanning my review of the original book I learned that I really moreso thought it just okay, and I’d say my opinion of Strout is consistent. In fact, she is so consistent that my review of this book could literally be word for […]

Not So Ordinary

Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger

May 11, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I read this book over a month ago, so in covid time, that’s like what, 7 months ago?! When I went over to Goodreads to figure out how far behind I was in my Cannonball reviews I was like, “Oh yeeeeah. I read that!!” It was the book club pick for my local library book club, but since we didn’t meet last month (when I had read the book, Trevor Noah’s amazing Born a Crime) I figured I was off the hook this month but […]

Return to Gilead

The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

May 11, 2020 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

When I saw Margaret Atwood speak at Northwestern in 2018 (Am I bragging a bit? Yes. It was so cool and she was great and I was in the second rooooow and I continue to not have chill about it) she teased an upcoming announcement and low and behold, it was the sequel to Handmaid’s Tale! I was 60/40 eager/skeptical. I never read the sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird, but of course that release was fraught with drama concerning Lee’s wishes. This was a […]
