I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

More Practical Magic, Mo’ Problems (No Money)

Magic Lessons (Practical Magic .1) by Alice Hoffman

November 15, 2020 by cheerbrarian 3 Comments

Alice Hoffman is a great author, and I’ve been reading her books since high school. My reading style used to be to find an author I liked, and then devour everything in their pantheon. My enthusiasm for her works waned a little in my adult years (eww, gross, old), and I thought I’d outgrown her storytelling style, but the first prequel to Practical Magic, Rules of Magic, sparked my interest and I really enjoyed learning more about the Owens sisters, it was a treat to […]

My oh my: a little book with a big punch (Reader’s Choice)

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

November 15, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

HOLY GUACAMOLE THIS BOOK IS SO GOOD. Like, so so good. I heard a lot of good things, but it was so little an unassuming it sat on my bookshelf for over a month, having snagged it from the library. The cover is intriguing, with its big bold green font, but I figured I’d get around to it. Well, one night about 20 minutes before I wanted to be asleep I figured eh, I’ll crack this one open. One hour and half of the book […]

The master at some of his best work (Belated Bingo – White Whale)

11/22/63 by Stephen King

November 15, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I’m a big fan of Stephen King. I’ve read many of the classics (Pet Sematary, The Shining, It, Misery, Salem’s Lot, Firestarter,  Needful Things) some of the zany ones (Christine and Rose Madder)  and I think my favorite, the most not-put-down-able for me, was The Stand. All that said I find him pretty uneven and sort of have to steel myself for his typical writing style. For folks that haven’t read any of his books, the way I describe it is that it is always […]

3/4 of a Good Book (Belated Bingo – Yellow)

Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

November 15, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This book was a journey for me, a loooong road from start to finish. A friend sent it to me in the mail, having not finished it, but thinking I would like to read it. Her disclaimer was that she was reading it while pregnant and due to something that happened to a pregnant woman wasn’t able to read on. I mean, a book about a civil war is going to be a tough read for anyone, but certainly for an expectant mother possibly a […]

Looking for a great debut fiction novel? Look no further! (Belated Bingo – Book Club)

If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha

November 6, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Well hello there. I am well beyond in my reading goal AND with my reviews AND missed my chance to bingo (insert dramatic sigh). But I’m going to keep on truckin’ for my own personal benefit with my bingo board (because it’s fun!) and will chalk it up to the nightmare that is 2020 collateral damage. ONWARD! (I’m not tagging the reviews, just including what my Belated Bingo category was in the title). This book is in the Book Club category for me because a […]

A walk down white man memory lane (Bingo – Gateway)

Chances Are by Richard Russo

October 4, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I’ve been drawn to reading more diverse authors/stories lately so I feel a bit of guilt for going back to an old favorite, Richard Russo, an older white guy who writes predominately about old white guys, and this book is no different. That said, why should I fault Russo for writing what he presumably knows and creating layered and interesting characters, and why should I fault myself for reading a good book? I’ve liked every book of his that I read and consider his writing […]
