I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

Summer Knight by Jim Butcher

Here I am again, another Dresden file closed! And I’m still along for the ride. The gang is all here: the entire wizard White Council, a blast from the past Dresden thought was gone, kooky fairy godmother Leanansidhe, more oodles of fairies, wolfy friends, and head of SI Karrin Murphy. Speaking of, I had NO IDEA he was spelling her first name like that until I started looking up quotes for my post title: the perils of audiobook. That led me to read another review […]

Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead by Brene Brown

March 16, 2021 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I work to not be this person, but I definitely have a touch of the “if everybody likes x maybe I don’t want to like x” stubborn streak. I’ve identified it as sort of a pointless attitude (I mean, I’m only hurting myself) and I strive to be more “let people live” but the overwhelming popularity of Brene Brown had me hesitate to pick up this book. That, and the fact that I was certainthat her writing was going to make me confront some things […]

How Long 'Til Black Future Month? by N.K. Jemisin

February 14, 2021 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

LeVar Burton is a national treasure. As the originator of Reading Rainbow, Geordi LaForge on Star Trek TNG and the creator of one of my favorite podcasts, LeVar Burton Reads, I have spent a not insignificant amount of time with him, and for that I’m grateful to him. And now, I have to take it a step further because he introduced me to the amazing creativity of N.K. Jemisin. He first read “Playing Nice with God’s Bowling Ball” for a live event and interviewed Jemisin […]

“I, Claudia Kincaid, want to be different when I go back. Like being a heroine is being different.”

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Koningsburg

February 14, 2021 by cheerbrarian 3 Comments

On a recent in person trip to the library (a luxury in these pandemic times) I scoured the kiddo section looking for things that might appeal to my 11 year old. He wasn’t present, so I was casting a wide net about what would pique his interest. (I average one winning selection for about every 5 mehs, so it’s a bit of a numbers game). My eyes landed on this book, and I was instantly transported back to my youth. I couldn’t have told you […]

Holy s***,” I breathed, “heckhounds.”

Grave Peril (Dresden Files #3) by Jim Butcher

February 13, 2021 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

I am continuing my Dresden Files journey and so very into it. In fact, I find Jim Butcher to be a perfect fantasy antithesis of my previous read/review, which was the last in the N.K. Jemisin Broken Earth trilogy. Where Jemisin is layered and cerebral, Butcher is spoon-feeding you and a fun romp. In each book of the series, I get hints of the Tru Blood series in that Butcher ploddingly repeats himself with character intros, Harry, tortured wizard Detective; Karrin Murphy tough as nails […]

How can we prepare for the future if we won’t acknowledge the past?

The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin

February 12, 2021 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

I did it! I finished the trilogy!!! It feels a little weird to be proud, I mean, I’ve read a trilogy before, but because I started this journey with an arched eyebrow toward fantasy I feel like I have come out on the other side as a little different, a true fantasy fan. And that credit goes to the awe-inspiring Jemisin. I went down a bit of an internet rabbithole reading about her because she is so cool and smart and found an early AMA […]
