I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

The Cat Who Ate Danish Modern by Lilian Jackson Braun

This book came into my life serendipitously. I took my first out-of-state vaccinated soiree back home to the sweaty state of Louisiana to see family a few weeks back (Yay!). I’m a big fan of an outdoor walk so I took my mom along for a jaunt and we walked around the neighborhood outside of my aunt’s house and happened upon a little free library. I’m more of the reader and she is more of the shopper, but together that means that neither of us […]

“Polka. Will Never. Die!”

Dead Beat by Jim Butcher

All right. Look. I don’t know how to talk about this book without it getting spoilery as heck, so if you are thinking you might read this book, then just skip this here review if you don’t want plot moments spoiled, things that made me gasp and giggle. Because I have got to talk about it. First things first, this review is going to be an ode to Butters, who essentially in this novel is elevated to the status of a relucant Watson to Dresden’s […]

“I thought how great it would be if we could trade in Fudge for a nice cocker spaniel.”

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume

Okay people. I think the last three reviews I have written start with hand-wringing about being behind in reviews. This time is no different. Except for how I am determined, or should I say DETERMINED to get caught up. I have a twisted process in that I don’t like to keep reading if I haven’t reviewed, so now I’m in this twisted merry-go-round of I want to read, but I’m behind in reviews, but I’m more behind than I’ve been in a bit so it […]

“Cal feels like he ought to stand on a street corner handing out warnings, little pieces of paper that just say: Anyone could do anything.”

The Searcher by Tana French

TANA FRENCH TANA FRENCH TANA FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEENCH. I LOVE TANA FREEEEEENCH. Since I learned of Tana French, the Dublin murder series has been one of my number one recommended book series to anyone who asks (or ya know, stands nearby too long quietly, and thus gets accosted by my recommendation). I typically sum it up with “If you like Law and Order SVU you’ll like her and her books” but am not sure that is fair to French, more so that’s me casting a wide net […]

“Has anyone noticed this whole city is looking for us, mad at us, or wants to kill us?” “So?” said Kaz. “Well, usually it’s just half the city.”

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

Y’all. I’m here to say, loudly and proudly, I like fantasy. I don’t know why I didn’t see it before, maybe because I get confused by book genres, but I’m a real fan and delighted to keep finding new fun books to dive into thanks to the CBR community (hip hooray!) I don’t read a lot of YA so definitely have zero ideas of what’s new and hot in that sphere, so heard about this possibly at one of the Zoom book clubs (I think?) […]

Blood Rites (Dresden Files #6) by Jim Butcher

May 31, 2021 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

All right people. I am here to crawl out beneath 8 (!) unwritten book reviews. Woof! I’m not sure if I’ve ever been this behind before in my history as a Cannonballer. Why the hiatus? Well, I am working on writing my own book (!!) and thinking I should prioritize THAT writing over THIS WRITING but spoiler, I haven’t done great at either. So I’m going to refocus and remember that practicing writing IS working on my book (just from sideways) so book reviews “count” […]
