I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

August 22, 2021 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

In one word: Disappointing Cannonball Read Bingo: Libations Alright y’all. I am here with a story of heartbreak. I absolutely ADORED Grady Hendrix’s 2016 “My Best Friend’s Exorcism.” I judged it by its cover immediately as it was styled to look like an old VHS tape, so I was sold from jump. Set in the 80s, it was a seamless blend of horror, humor, and coming of age, a book that I fell into completely and had on my best of the year list. I […]

Proven Guilty by Jim Butcher

Aight people. Still on this Dresden train, this one gets a solid three because of a plot point I am taking big issue with that we will get to in a moment.. Overall, lots of good action and development in this book. It’s always a good time when the faeries get involved. The standout greatest thing about this book to me is the character development we got with Charity this go-round. I’m always thirsting for more female characters in general, and especially with Butcher as […]

Dicey's Song by Cynthia Voigt

Y’ALL. I’M DOING IT. AFTER I POST THIS I AM ALL CAUGHT UP IN MY REVIEWS!!! If anyone out there is behind in reviews, let me be your motivation. YOU CAN DO IT. Let’s get me to the finish line! Voight’s Tillerman Cycle follows the Tillerman siblings (Dicey, James, Maybeth, and Sammy) as they learn to live with their grandmother, after being abandoned by their mother. Their grandmother is the quintessential recluse but has opened her home and heart to her estranged grandchildren. They are […]

“This is the problem of history. We cannot know that which we were not there to see and hear and experience for ourselves.”

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

June 20, 2021 by cheerbrarian 7 Comments

I am finally getting around to read my second Cannonball Read book exchange gift book this year from Bonnie (thanks Bonnie!) I don’t know what took me so dang long because I loved the first book she gave me, Red White and Royal Blue, and it wasn’t even on my radar to read, and neither was Homegoing and I should have known that Bonnie knows her book business and BOY. DOES. SHE. Homegoing is definitely in my top books of the year, and one I’m […]

Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott

June 20, 2021 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

For a long while, I’ve said that I was going to write a book. It has always been the thing I could do if I wanted to, but I didn’t want to actually try because DUH then I would actually have to prove that I could do the thing I so nonchalantly knew I could do. Makes sense, right? See also “fear of failure” and “you can’t fail if you don’t have a plan” and you’ll be downright cozy with some of my life mantras. […]

Gangster Nation by Tod Goldberg

June 20, 2021 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This read was a long time coming! I purchased Gangster Nation when it came out in 2017 and Tod was going on tour promoting it. First things first, I’m referring to him by his first name not because we are in any way actual friends, but because I FEEL like we are because I am a longtime listener of his podcast, Literary Disco, wherein he and two of his friends from an MFA program read and review books. Also, one of those friends is Rider […]
