I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

cheerbrarian's Reviews:

“She used to think the sea the one blessing of winter: even though the world around her was bleak, the water seldom lost its color. Today the contrast between the dead black and the rich blue is almost impossible to believe in.”

The Stars are Fire by Anita Shreve

In one word: Unrelenting Cannonball Bingo Bingo: Book Club I picked up this book as it was the September offering of my local library book club that was meeting in person for the first time in five-ever. This was a great book for a book club, in that opinions varied on its merits, and “based on a true story” historical fiction is ripe for conversation. The story is based on a real coastal wildfire that took place in Maine in 1947. In the beginning, this […]

“Caring about someone isn’t complicated. It isn’t easy. But it isn’t complicated, either. Kinda like lifting the engine block out of a car.”

Small Favor (Dresden Files #10) by Jim Butcher

In one word: Action-packed Cannonball Read Bingo: Reader’s Choice (Replacing Fauna) Dresden is in it again. High stakes, low chance of survival, will he come out on top? At this point, book 10 of I don’t even know how many, it’s not a spoiler that um, yes, he will. But I will say this one really is firing on all cylinders. The whole gang is around in this one, gangster Marcone, the vile Denarians, and one of my favorites, the Archive, the 12-year-old girl who […]

“If it’s attention (deciding what to pay attention to) that makes our reality, regaining control of it can also mean the discovery of new worlds and new ways of moving through them.”

How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy by Jenny Odell

September 20, 2021 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

In one word: Cerebral Cannonball Read Bingo: Flora I found myself at the MOST adorable independent bookstore (swoon) and spent a delicious amount of time perusing the shelves. That day I was in a particular mood regarding my social media use, railing against the timesuck that for me is scrolling Facebook and Instagram. I was looking for some novel that I can no longer identify. They didn’t have it in stock, but I found this one instead. It had pretty good reviews on Goodreads (more […]

“I have picked up the old stories and I have shaken them until the hidden women appear in plain sight. I have celebrated them in song because they have waited long enough.”

A Thousand Suns by Natalie Haynes

In one word: Refreshing Cannonball Read Bingo: Mythic Y’all. Y’ALL. I HAVE BEEN SO FAR BEHIND IN REVIEWS FOR LIKE TWO MONTHS AND WITH THIS ONE I AM ALL CAUGHT UP AND I HAVE MY FIRST BINGO YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY. Thank you. Where was I? Ah yes. The book! A Thousand Ships was one I found on the new releases shelf at my library and a) it looked pretty and b) was recommended on the cover by Madeline Miller, author of Circe, and c) I was […]

“I don’t do that kind of negativity. If you put your energy into thinking about how much the fall would hurt, you’re already halfway down.”

Broken Harbor (Dublin Murder Squad, #4) by Tana French

In one word: Gripping Cannonball Read Bingo: Shelfie Review 2021: Hi. Me again. Hear with more French fervor. Love. Her. I have the latest installment of the Dublin Murder Series on my bookshelf, and in fact, I think I’ve had it for months. But once I read it, I am caught up, and I can’t quite face that. So as a pandemic project I decided to reread all of them to then make my way to the most recent installment. I’m here to report that […]

“Hope was no longer a tiny, flickering flame. It was a bonfire.”

Some Assembly Required: A True Story of Love and Organ Transplants by T.J. Condon

September 14, 2021 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

In one word: Authentic Cannonball Read Bingo: Pandemic Full disclosure, TJ is a new acquaintance of mine and I was so excited to support her debut book! I of course was also a little nervous about reading it, what if I didn’t like it, how would I review it honestly? But no worries there, this book is (somehow) a refreshing and fun look at how both she and her husband survived her husband’s liver transplant, with their humor and marriage still intact. As a human […]
