I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman

April 2, 2022 by cheerbrarian 4 Comments

In One Word: Satisfying LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK. LOVE IT. The only thing I don’t like about it is that I’m done reading it and I can’t read it again the first time. This is the second book in Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series and I really tried to hold out on reading it, since I just finished the first a month ago, but I could not wait. I saw a review from someone who said they loved the first one and they loved […]

“The impossible we do immediately. The unimaginable takes a little while.”

Cold Days (Dresden Files #14) by Jim Butcher

In one word: Busy I finished reading this over a month ago and am now clawing my way through a backlog of tardy reviews on this snowy Midwestern APRIL day. Snowy. APRIL. DAY. In what we are calling Spring I guess? Ruuuuude. But I digress. When I dig into the recesses of my mind about this book, not much is surfacing, which isn’t a great sign. This book was reminiscent of an SNL Stefon skit. Bear with me here. For the unfamiliar, Stefon is an […]

“Strivers grasped for something better – maybe it existed, maybe it didn’t – and crooks schemed…”

Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead

In one word: Meandering This book was the January/February selection for my work Book Club, of which I am now the unofficial president. Having been at my company for only three months I am stoked about this turn of events and was eager to discuss it with coworkers. This was a GREAT book club book, lots to discuss. I was familiar with Colson Whitehead, having read one of his Pulitzer winners, The Nickel Boys (which tore my heart out) so I was excited to dive […]

“Her death hit in waves. Not a flood, but water lapping steadily at her ankles. You could drown in two inches of water. Maybe grief was the same.”

The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

In one word: Clever Accolades have poured in for this book: nominated for a number of literary awards, Good Morning America Book Club selection, picked as a “book of the year” on numerous lists (including Barack Obama’s), and the “one book one community read” for my local book club. The last accolade is what swayed me to pick it up as I’m a loyal participant of the library book club. I was hesitant because we read Bennett’s “The Mothers” four years ago and I did […]

“After a certain age, you can pretty much do whatever takes your fancy. No one tells you off, except for your doctors and your children.”

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

February 19, 2022 by cheerbrarian 4 Comments

In one word: Charming Once again, the recommendations of the Cannonball Read community came in with a flawless pick that I absolutely adored. I believe it was at the last CBR Zoom meet-up that this book was mentioned. I know by now if more than two or more cannonballers chime in with YES YES THAT’S A GOOD ONE about a book that I should just go ahead and bump it up to the top of my list. (Three cheers for internet friends who though you […]

“I used to think that revenge was about defending one’s honor, but it turns out that honor is just spite dressed up for Sunday.”

The Queer Principles of Kit Webb (#1) by Cat Sebastian

February 16, 2022 by cheerbrarian 5 Comments

In one word: Cheeky I don’t read a lot of romance, but this rogue meets aristocrat was recommended by many in the Cannonball Read community, so I put it on my list for something fun and light for the new year. I had the lucky opportunity to escape the frigid midwest for the beach in mid-January and this book was an absolutely perfect beach read, fun and cheeky with equal parts swashbuckling mystery and eyebrow waggling sexy times. Kit is a coffee shop owner and […]
