I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

Cannonball Read Bingo Square: Cold I”m late to the game on this 2012 book about Ove, who I would dub the King of all Curmudgeons. Picking this book for the “cold” bingo square was a no-brainer because his character first presents as the chilliest of all cold characters, with rarely a kind word to say about anyone. I personally would crown Ove as the King of all Curmudgeons. But of course, he would bristle at the honorific, belittling the idea that a) someone would pay […]

The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett

“Twoflower was a tourist, the first ever seen on the discworld. Tourist, Rincewind had decided, meant ‘idiot’.”

The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett

Cannonball Read Bingo Square: Series Setting foot inside Terry Pratchett’s Discworld has been a goal of mine, but I have (and continue to feel) intimidated by the undertaking. From my understanding, you can start wherever because although the books are all in the same universe, there aren’t traditional sequels or one linear arc to the story, so they don’t have to be read in a particular order. For some people, that would be freeing, but I find the power of limitless choice overwhelming; I prefer […]

“This is the strange lesson of living in a pandemic: life can be tranquil in the face of death.”

Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel

Cannonball Read Book Square: Funky In one word: Tether Reading St. John Mandel I’m reminded of the scene in the AMAZING movie Booksmart, wherein two college-bound BFFs are determined to make up for lost time and live it up the night before their high school graduation. In one of my favorite scenes, best friends Molly and Amy are getting ready to go out and hyping each other up for their respective outfits, aggressively hurling positive affirmations at each other. “Who gave you permission to take […]

“The life where nothing was ever unexpected. Or inconvenient. Or unusual. The life without colour, pain or past.”

The Giver by Lois Lowry

August 11, 2022 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Cannonball Read Bingo Square: Minds I have owned a copy of The Giver for quite a while and it has sat collecting dust on our bookshelf reserved for the classics. My kiddo, on a whim, picked it up and when my 13-year-old picks up something that is a classic, I generally take that as an opportunity to revisit it. (See also, failed attempt to get him to read “A Wrinkle in Time.”) When I picked it up to reread, I soon began to wonder if […]

“No loss is felt more keenly than the loss of what might have been. No nostalgia hurts as much as nostalgia for things that never existed.”

An Unnecessary Woman by Rabih Alameddine

August 3, 2022 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

In one word: Hopeful Cannonball Read Bingo Square: Cozy For a few consecutive months, I challenged my work book club to pick its book based on the heritage month (she says, realizing how smug she sounds) and thus, I read this book in April for Arab American Heritage Month. I was wholly unfamiliar with the author but excited to give something international a try. After selecting it for the club, I realized that my public library didn’t have a copy so I put one on […]

“My ladies had changed nothing but the reasons for their pretense. If I had learned anything from them, it was this: only a fool lives in water and remains an enemy of the crocodile.”

The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi

August 2, 2022 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Cannonball Read Bingo Square: Shadow Y’all. I finished this book May 17th for my library book club, and I am just now (finally) reviewing it. What. A. Journey. Big props to CBR Bingo for being the catalyst for me getting me out of this backlog and writing slump… The titular Henna Artist (Lakshmi) is a shadow in that she disappeared from her village and has been building a name for herself in the upper social circles of Jaipur as a henna artist. Her past catches […]
