I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

In one word: Possibility Cannonball Read Bingo: Question This book was been on my to-read list for quite a while, but I couldn’t get it done! I checked it out from the library two separate times and returned it unopened. I actually opened a copy that was at our vacation house last year, but when I realized it was an imagining of what happens after you die, and likely would leave me with more questions than answers, the timing was bad. I had juuuust finished […]

“Vulnerability is not oversharing, it’s sharing with people who have earned the right to hear our stories and our experiences. Vulnerability is not weakness; it’s our greatest measure of courage.”

Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience by Brene Brown

November 7, 2022 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

In one word: Mind-Altering Cannonball Read Bingo: Heart I was already a big Brene Brown fan before I opened this book, so I knew to steel myself for something that was going to teach me, challenge me, and break my brain a little bit. Guess what? That’s exactly what happened! This is not something to read cover to cover but is a manual for understanding and navigating emotions. It’s a good read, great even, but it took me over four months to read by design; […]

Clark and Division by Naomi Hirahara

November 6, 2022 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

In one word: Divided Cannonball Read Bingo: New I hadn’t heard of the October pick for my public library book club but as soon as my eyes peered upon the cover my expectations jumped up a notch because Mr. Sulu himself, George Takei, had good things to say about it. Known predominantly for his work on Star Trek, we also admire him in my house for his acclaimed graphic novel “They Called Us Enemy” which details his experiences as a prisoner in one of the […]

“Trouble is just like love, after all; it comes in unannounced and takes over before you’ve had a chance to reconsider, or even to think.”

Pratical Magic by Alice Hoffman

November 6, 2022 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

In one word: Lasting Cannonball Read Bingo: Holiday This is at least my fourth time reading Practical Magic; at this point in my life, I consider both it and Alice Hoffman old friends.  We may not talk a lot anymore, but we can always pick up right where we left off. Re-reading it is like taking a mini-holiday as it has become a cozy comfort read, and its magical elements make it perfect for a Halloween-y October book club selection, which is what got me […]

“You know the problem with heroes and saints, Nikolai?” I asked as I closed the book’s cover and headed for the door. “They always end up dead.”

Siege and Storm (Shadow and Bone Trilogy #2) by Leigh Bardugo

November 6, 2022 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

In one word: Middling Cannonball Read Bingo: Monster In book two of the Shadow and Bone series, The Darkling (or, as we refer to him in my house The Darkling Duck) is maaaaad having been thwarted in his attempt to wield Alina’s power… for the time being. Alina and Mal are now on the run, hopeful that by tracking the second amplifier they might be able to give Alina the edge she needs to fight The Darkling (Duck) and be victorious. Full disclosure,  the action […]

Very few people believed that they were bad, and this was the scariest part. Human nature could be so hideous, but it persisted in this ugliness by insisting it was good.”

Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka

November 5, 2022 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Cannonball Read Bingo: Scandal In one word: Evocative This book came by recommendation of a like-minded reading pal who threw the phrase “best book I read all year” out, so I decided that reading it was a no-brainer, especially as I was looking for something dark and spooky. It doesn’t get much darker than a male serial killer of women, especially as true crime is having such a surge in popularity in recent years. Plus, I needed something for my Cannonball Read bingo “scandal” card […]
