I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer

CBR Bingo – Relation(ship) I was looking for a book to dive into whole to lift my spirits post-layoff and a friend recommended this, saying she “recommends it for anyone who loves books and needs a warm hug.” In my opinion, she nailed the recommendation for my situation. This book is just sweet enough, but also just dark enough, to appeal to a troubled mind looking for distraction. Any book lover will be delighted to dive into this world. Jack Masterson, Willy Wonka-esque children’s author, […]

“Sometimes I think,” she said slowly, “that if a man were to spend a day being a woman in America, he wouldn’t make it past noon.”

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

CBR Bingo – On the Air This book came highly recommended by a few people who have similar reading sensibilities as me, so I went into it presuming I would like it, and I was not wrong. However, bit of a quick disclaimer: I was shaken up at the start of the book because in this instance, judging the book by its cover will leave you on uneven footing as you get your book legs (I’m workshopping it a la “sea legs.” You heard it […]

“Most of us can hide our greatest hurts and longings. It’s how we survive each day. We pretend the pain isn’t there, that we are made of scars instead of wounds.”

King of Scars (King of Scars #1) by Leigh Bardugo

August 11, 2023 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – On The Road I don’t read a lot of YA but a good friend of mine and many members of the CBR community have raved about Bardugo’s world, so I’m in for the long haul. If you’re new to it, a piece of advice. I was told to ignore chronological order when beginning because the Six of Crows duology is so much better than the original Shadow and Bone trilogy. I was skeptical but heeded that advice and I’m glad I did […]

I remember this being one of my first moments nearing adulthood, when I realized how powerful memory was — or at least it was the first time it hurt the most. And there was nothing I could do about the pain of the past — it just settled over me

The Shards by Bret Easton Ellis

August 9, 2023 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

CBR Bingo – Queer Lives “Y’all. Bret Easton Ellis is NOT OKAY.” So says I, at my book club where we read this book. I read American Psycho about a decade ago and distinctly remember getting to something so disturbing that I yelped out loud, slammed the book shut, and tossed it across the room. If that visceral experience sounds exciting to you, well Ellis has plenty more to disturb and haunt you with, and in this, his newest book, he will take 595 pages […]

“Our family histories are simply stories. They are myths we create about the people who came before us, in order to make sense of ourselves.”

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

August 9, 2023 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – Dwelling I am a huuuuuuuge fan of Taylor Jenkins Reid. The first book of hers I consumed was the audio version of “Daisy Jones and the Six” which I loved 5000; the same can be said for everything else of hers I’ve read. She is pure MAGIC, an author who is so talented and adept at making historical fiction seem like non-fiction that I’m a little suspicious she may have gone down to Georgia and fiddled against the devil in order to […]

“This is what time travel is. It’s looking at a person, and seeing them in the present and the past, concurrently. And that mode of transport only worked with those one had known a significant time.”

Tomorow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

August 8, 2023 by cheerbrarian 4 Comments

CBR Bingo – Hold Steady I don’t know what I thought this book was going to be, but this novel exceeded all of my expectations. Someone who recommended it to me said she could have read 200 more pages and I agree. 300 even. 400! IT WAS SO GOOD. I wanted to follow the characters forever and ever. Weepy Warning – this book brought me to tears, to be clear, I was full-on sobbing to the point that my husband was concerned about me. This […]
