Two tales of Charlotte

A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro

Murder on Cold Street by Sherry Thomas

February 14, 2021 by Catticus Finch 1 Comment

I finished reading these two books recently, and since they shared a common named protagonist, it seemed like a no brainer to review them together.  Both of these feature Charlotte Holmes, solver of mysteries, but in very different settings. Book:  A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro “The two of us, we’re the best kind of disaster. Apples and oranges. Well, more like apples and machetes.”  There are many iterations and retelling of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson out there these days.  This one is […]

Everything you wanted to know about a Reno divorce in 1938 but were afraid to ask

Better Luck Next Time by Julia Claiborne Johnson

February 11, 2021 by Catticus Finch Leave a Comment

This book was an enjoyable read, despite being about divorce!  Maybe it’s news to some out there, but back in the day a divorce wasn’t easy to obtain.  This book focuses on a six week period at the Flying Leap Divorce Ranch in 1938.  Yes, that’s right – a divorce ranch where women could stay for six weeks to gain resident status, and get their no questions asked divorce.  The women came from various social classes, from the ultra wealthy who might be working on […]

Another death in the Scottish countryside

Mortal Arts by Anna Lee Huber

January 30, 2021 by Catticus Finch Leave a Comment

This is book two in the Lady Darby mystery series, and after my enthusiasm with book one I found this to be a bit of a letdown.  As per the book blurb:  “After her foray into murder investigation, Kiera must journey to Edinburgh with her family so that her pregnant sister can be close to proper medical care. But the city is full of many things Kiera isn’t quite ready to face: the society ladies keen on judging her, her fellow investigator—and romantic entanglement—Sebastian Gage, […]

Victorian family saga that would make a good soap opera

A Dangerous Fortune by Ken Follett

January 23, 2021 by Catticus Finch Leave a Comment

I’m not one of those people with stacks of books in a TBR pile – in fact, I own very few books.  Years ago, I decided that the library was a much better way to go and easier on the bank account.  Now in the days of Covid, I mainly borrow e-books, which is even better as I can just return it with a touch and look for my next read.  In my latest scroll of available books, I found this one – I’ve never […]

Duke seeks wife for his motherless brood of eight

My Last Duchess by Eloisa James

January 18, 2021 by Catticus Finch Leave a Comment

The series “The Wildes of Lindow Castle” features various children of the Duke of Lindow, and I’ve read several of them.  This book is a prequel to tell the story of the Duke and his last Duchess – I don’t recall the couple making that much of an impression on me in the other books, so I was surprised to see this novella about them! Hugo, the aforementioned Duke, is in need of a wife.  His first wife passed away, leaving him with four young […]

The cook and the case of the missing children

Murder in the East End by Jennifer Ashley

January 8, 2021 by Catticus Finch Leave a Comment

This is book four in the Below Stairs series by Jennifer Ashley, set in Victorian England.  The series is unique in that the focus is on Kat Holloway, a cook in a grand house in Mayfair – an upstairs/downstairs premise that gives you a look into the workings of a large kitchen in that time period.  She is intelligent and resourceful, and her quick thinking has saved many a meal when the upstairs folk demand a menu change at the last minute.   But of course, […]
