Many moons ago I took part in Cannonball Read II, under the name Teabelly. A lot has changed since then, and I now have five year old twin girls. I'm not getting as much reading done, but I'm hoping to make a half Cannonball at least.

“Knowledge isn’t a sign of divine favor. Prosperity is.”

Bingo square: This is the End. Also I hit half a cannonball, yay! That was my goal so everything from here on in is extra. There will be some spoilers for the first book in here. Picking up where Six of Crows left off, Crooked Kingdom follows Kaz Brekker and his gang of ne’er-do-wells as they deal with the betrayal and fallout from their heist. Inej has been taken hostage and they don’t have the money promised them. They’re all a bit battered and exhausted but […]

“Sometimes you need to scorch everything to the ground and start over”

July 31, 2018 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

The book begins with a house burning down and then goes back to how we got there, following the lives of a group of people who become intertwined through their children and siblings. Mia Warren and her teenager daughter, Pearl, move into a rented house in Shaker Heights, Ohio. It’s a city that has been planned to perfection and run by specific rules, down to what colour you can paint your house. It’s safe and predictable and the opposite of what Mia and Pearl have […]

‘Life is happening to us now, just like it’s happening to you’

June 25, 2018 by Carriejay 1 Comment

Mikey is about to graduate from high school and head off to college, escaping his small town and irritating parents, but leaving behind some amazing friends. His anxiety is through the roof, trapping him in loops of hand washing and counting, and that’s before the indie kids start dying. There’s something strange happening in this town. Again. There’s been soul eating ghosts and vampires and gods and now there’s something else lurking in the woods causing the deer to freak out and the police force […]

They do it because they can

June 20, 2018 by Carriejay 4 Comments

The Power considers a world in which women can create and conduct electricity with their bodies, with enough juice to kill a man. Now the tables have turned, and it’s men who have to be afraid. What will become of this new world order? The story unfolds through four main characters. There’s Roxy, daughter of a London gangster; Allie, grown up in foster care and creates a new persona once her power comes in, that of Mother Eve; Margot, mayor of somewhere in the US […]
