Many moons ago I took part in Cannonball Read II, under the name Teabelly. A lot has changed since then, and I now have five year old twin girls. I'm not getting as much reading done, but I'm hoping to make a half Cannonball at least.

The Alter sisters lead fairly secluded lives in their Manhattan apartment, happy to spend their time in each other’s company. There’s the eldest, Lady, a divorcee, middle child Vee who lost her much loved husband quite young, and baby Delph, forever single and supposedly happy about it. Together they are writing their memoirs, which doubles as a joint suicide note. Come December 31st, 1999, the Alter sisters intend to take their lives. But first they want to explain. They want to lay out the history […]

Us Against You by Fredrik Backman

January 18, 2019 by Carriejay 1 Comment

Beartown has had a rough few months. A small community in the middle of the forest, the factory that sustains its workers might be shut down, and the one thing they hold fast to more than anything – ice hockey – has been tainted by scandal. Their best player raped a girl and has now left town, the club has been left in ruins, and everyone is looking for someone to blame. Those in the firing line include Peter, the general manager of the hockey […]

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green

January 8, 2019 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

Twenty-three year old April May is just about getting by in New York. Living with (but not living with) her girlfriend Maya and working in a role that utilises her degree, she’s doing OK. Then one night on her way home she stumbles upon a giant sculpture, a kind of Transformer wannabe in Samurai armour. Initially thinking it some sort of art installation, she calls her best friend Andy and they upload a video to Youtube. It goes viral, since the Carls, as they come […]

Good and Mad: The Revolutionary Power of Women's Anger by Rebecca Traister

January 6, 2019 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

Rebecca Traister delves into the history of women’s anger and how it has motivated them and pushed them to fight for their beliefs. It also examines how society feels about women’s anger, and that women are often punished for daring to show their emotions, especially if that emotion is perceived as negative. Men are viewed as powerful and authoritative if they get mad – they’re allowed to, it’s expected, and it must be coming from a reasonable place. When a woman shows her anger she’s […]

An Odd Delight

December 27, 2018 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

In November 1982, a horrible event occurs at the Bellweather Hotel. A murder-suicide, witnessed by a young bridesmaid, Minnie Graves, leaves its imprint on both her and the hotel. Fifteen years later, the hotel is gearing up for the Statewide Festival, where hundreds of high school musicians come for a weekend of study and performance. Among them are Alice Hatmaker and her twin brother Rabbit (real name Bert). Both are battling with the usual issues of growing up and possibly apart, and when Alice’s roommate […]

In early 1946, author Juliet Ashton receives a letter from a man on Guernsey, who happens to own a book that was previously hers. They strike up a correspondence, and through that she learns about the German occupation of Guernsey during the war and the titular Society. Intrigued, Juliet wonders if this might be the subject for her next book. Told entirely through letters, we get to know the characters and fall in love with them as Juliet does. There’s Dawsey, who has Juliet’s old […]
