Many moons ago I took part in Cannonball Read II, under the name Teabelly. A lot has changed since then, and I now have five year old twin girls. I'm not getting as much reading done, but I'm hoping to make a half Cannonball at least.

Bring the light

The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley

November 13, 2019 by Carriejay 4 Comments

Dietz is a grunt in a war with Mars. New technology allows humans to be broken down into light and transported elsewhere – to Mars or other areas of Earth instantaneously. But Dietz starts having bad drops, falling out of sync with her unit, moving around in time. Are they really experiencing the war in a non-linear fashion, or have they come back wrong? Starting with Dietz’s experiences as a new recruit and going through basic training, The Light Brigade takes us on a journey […]

The Last Summer of the Garrett Girls by Jessica Spotswood

November 7, 2019 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

The Garrett sisters live with their grandmother in the small town of Remington Hollow. There’s Des, the oldest at 19, who helps run the family bookstore and has little in life outside of looking after her family; Bea, who has life all planned out – heading to college with her boyfriend of five years – and it’s giving her panic attacks; Kat, an aspiring actress with a role in the community theatre production whose boyfriend just broke her heart. But she’s got a plan to […]

Master of the first draft, apparently

Master of Murder by Christopher Pike

November 2, 2019 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

Marvin (no, really, Marvin) seems like your typical 17 year old boy, but he’s actually America’s bestselling author of teen fiction under the pen name Mack Slate. Everyone is crazy about his latest series, The Mystery at Silver Spring, and desperate to know who killed his heroine, Ann. But Marvin is kind of a dork (who wouldn’t be with that name? Sorry Marvins of the world), even if he is at pains to let us know he’s actually quite handsome, in the right light. He’s […]

“The whole world thinks I’m a slut!”

Gimme a Kiss by Christopher Pike

October 31, 2019 by Carriejay 8 Comments

Jane Retton keeps a fictional diary that somehow ends up being copied and splashed all over school. In her latest entry she wrote about how she lost her virginity to her boyfriend, but it was a lie! The mean cheerleader is obviously behind this smear campaign (because Jane once said something sort of nasty about the cheerleaders in the school paper), and her boyfriend is denying it (she thinks it’s cos he’s a lame-o dude thinking about his own reputation but he mostly didn’t want […]

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

October 29, 2019 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

Cath is about to start her first year of university without her usual partner in crime. Wren, Cath’s identical twin sister, has decided to spread her wings and room with someone other than Cath for the first time in their lives. Cath now has to navigate the intimidating world of college and roommates and the dining hall, as well as classes that leave her feeling out of her depth. It feels natural to Cath to stay in her room where it is safe and work […]

The worst chosen one who’s ever been chosen

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

October 27, 2019 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: I Love This Simon Snow is the Chosen One. He has been prophesized throughout the ages as the greatest of all the mages but most of the time he has no idea what he’s doing. During the school year he lives at the Watford School of Magicks and gets by a lot of the time with help from his best friend, Penny. He has an evil roommate who is also possibly a vampire, a girlfriend who may like said vampire, and a nemesis […]
