Many moons ago I took part in Cannonball Read II, under the name Teabelly. A lot has changed since then, and I now have five year old twin girls. I'm not getting as much reading done, but I'm hoping to make a half Cannonball at least.

The Rosie Result by Graeme Simsion

January 9, 2020 by Carriejay 1 Comment

The third book in the Rosie trilogy sees Don Tillman – scientist, husband, father, world’s greatest problem-solver – facing a new challenge, this time in the form of his eleven year old son, Hudson. Don and Rosie have been married for over a decade and things are ticking along nicely (if you ignore a work event where Don is accused of racism, very publicly) until they receive a call from school about Hudson. Ensuing talks reveal the school would like him tested for autism. In […]

The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed By Jack the Ripper by Hallie Rubenhold

January 6, 2020 by Carriejay 2 Comments

In 1888 an unknown man became famous. His fame carried on over the decades and then centuries. Not for anything good, not for changing the world for the better, but for his violent murders. There have been countless books written about this shadowy figure. Comics, songs, films and TV series. There are museums and tours in his name. The mystery of his identity is still being investigated today. But his victims have not received the same kind of attention. Instead they have been pushed aside, […]

Know My Name by Chanel Miller

December 17, 2019 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

In June 2016, a victim impact statement was published on Buzzfeed, and went viral. The author, known then as Emily Doe, spoke eloquently and passionately about her sexual assault, the trial she had been through, and how her life had been affected. Her rapist, Brock Turner, received only six months in prison after being found guilty of the crime. He served only half of that. Much was made of his potential, the impact it would have on his future, how it was a mistake brought […]

Indianapolis: The True Story of the Worst Sea Disaster in U.S. Naval History and the Fifty-Year Fight to Exonerate an Innocent Man by Lynn Vincent and Sara Vladic

November 28, 2019 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

On July 30, 1945, not far past midnight, the USS Indianapolis was spotted by a Japanese submarine and hit by two torpedoes. The ship had just delivered the components of the atomic bomb in a highly classified mission. It takes around 12 minutes for the ship to sink, during which time there are intense fires and gallons of diesel are dumped into the sea. Nearly 900 men survive the explosions and make it into the water, some with only life jackets, others finding shelter on […]

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

November 19, 2019 by Carriejay 1 Comment

Simon Snow won. But he also lost. A lot. And now he’s lying on a couch barely living and his best friend is worried about him. His boyfriend wonders what’s going on in their relationship and everyone is walking on eggshells a bit. So Penelope decides they all need a holiday. In America! What better way to brush off the cobwebs and escape their normal (but never Normal) lives than a road trip across the U.S. of A? It starts out grand of course, these […]
