About CaribbeanClaire

CBR11 participant

I'm a UK Expat who has been living in the Caribbean for 25 years. I love reading and used to have to negotiate how much suitcase space could be devoted to books each time we left the island. Unbelievably I moved to an island without a book shop so I learned to read an eclectic mix of styles and genres as I swapped books with anyone and everyone. Now I read pretty much exclusively on a Kindle (I'm on my 5th one after wearing most of the others out!).

A Long and Complicated Read

A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

January 18, 2019 by CaribbeanClaire Leave a Comment

I’ve just finished this book, having bumped it way up my TBR list based on a review I read on here a short while ago.  On the surface, it’s an engaging story about a bunch of misfit species on a space ship that tunnels wormholes in space to help faster interstellar travel.    Our erstwhile captain is given a lucrative contract to build a new tunnel near a new planet, which has been taken over by an extremely war-like species that somehow are now part […]

I Tikka a Chance

Tikka Chance on Me by Suleikha Snyder

January 9, 2019 by CaribbeanClaire 1 Comment

This is a cute little novella from a new to me author.  At 72 pages, it can be read pretty much in one sitting.    Our heroine with the unlikely name of Pinky Grover (she admits her name makes her sound like a Muppet) has had to give up her dreams of studying for her Masters in Anthropology and come back to small town Indiana to work in her parents Indian restaurant whilst her mother recovers from cancer.  The book opens with her mother returned […]

A Horrifying Look at Apartheid from the Inside

Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

January 9, 2019 by CaribbeanClaire 4 Comments

I’ve had this book sitting on my Kindle for a while now but finally got around to reading it.  Trevor Noah is a great storyteller and the book is organised into chapters around events that have the same theme or are just based on a specific event.   Each chapter/vignette is prefaced by a factual couple of pages explaining the context for what is about to follow.  For example there is a long story occurring when Trevor is in his late teens that is centered around […]

All the Tropes, None of the Feels

Hollywood Scandal by Louise Bay

January 7, 2019 by CaribbeanClaire 2 Comments

I’ve read a number of Louise Bay books and enjoyed them.  This one kept popping up in my “recommended for you” lists but until now, I’ve always read the description and passed on it.   Matt Easton is a young, hot actor who has let success go to his head.  In his efforts to land a starring role in a franchise movie, he and his agents have toned down his bad boy image and tried to gloss over his playboy past.  Thus we meet him in […]
