I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

HeLa

March 8, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

This seemed like a fitting time to read Henrietta’s story, so closely following Black History month where her name has become a popular “little known hero” and did you know fact. I don’t remember hearing anything about HeLa cells in AP Bio as a senior in high school, but I do remember seeing the bright orange book cover of “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” in my college’s bookstore. Since then I feel like the name Henrietta Lacks is a bit more common knowledge, which […]

I have a love hate relationship with books that deal with psychological issues. As someone who has dealt with various diagnosis, prescriptions and failed therapy sessions sometimes they hit a little too close to home. Sara Benincasa’s memoir chronicles her journey through crippling panic attacks that leave her temporarily unable to leave her college  apartment. A particularly nervous child, Sara’s book begins with her going to an Italian ER for a panic attack while on a school trip and follows her into college at Emerson. […]

that book everyone has read and reviewed

I read the Fault in Our Stars in an afternoon, not because its a short book (though it’s not long by any means) but because it isn’t an easy book to put down. At this point I don’t think there is anyone out there unaware of the plot- Hazel is a smart, cancer ridden 16-year-old who meets Gus, a gorgeous, charismatic boy who is in remission, at a support group. This has probably been my favorite book I’ve read all year, which admittedly was a […]

Happy Accidents

March 4, 2014 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

Jane Lynch is one of those actors that didn’t get a big break until her late 30s, the first thing I remember her being in was Best in Show (when she was 40) even though I’ve seen her actual first movie role- The Fugitive- a dozen times. This whole book is basically the story of her growing up and hustling her way into pop culture permanence as Sue Sylvester from Glee. Lynch was brought up in a suburb of Chicago as the middle child of […]

From a Bitter Kitten

February 27, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

As  I mentioned in a previous review I have a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising. I also have an (probably unhealthy) obsession with celebrities and pop culture. Most of my bookmarked sites are for celebrity gossip, movie & television news and fashion blogs. One of my favorite blogs is http://tomandlorenzo.com/ run by TLo (as they are called)- a gay couple who are New York adjacent (Philadelphia I believe)- which started out as “Project Rungay”. They began during the first season of Project Runway (when it was […]

Gay Men Don’t Get Fat

February 25, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I have a degree in Fashion Merchandising and work at a high end retail store. I spent most of my college years binge watching America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway- needless to say I was well aware of Simon Doonan prior to this book. I think if I hadn’t already been aware of Doonan’s history as the creative director for Barney’s I probably wouldn’t have picked his book up to begin with, but I think I would most definitely been disappointed by it. I wouldn’t […]
