I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

the Spellman Files

June 17, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I can’t decide what I thought about The Spellman Files. Isabel definitely reminded me of Veronica Mars, which I loved, but there was just one too many story lines going on that the whole novel felt a bit ADD. “I liked finding dirt on people. It made all my trespasses seem trivial.” There is boy drama,  family drama and one last case. Like Veronica, Isabel is a private investigator who works for her family and has a natural knack for the profession. Her family is […]

the Girls of Atomic City

June 12, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I’ve always been a bit of a history nerd, I believe I mentioned that when I reviewed Monuments Men. I love WW2 and it’s always interesting to hear about the women’s part in aiding their men. Have you seen Bletchley Circle? It’s a BBC show about women, who were code breakers in England during the war, who are now bored housewives solving crimes. Anyway. The Girls of Atomic City is the untold story of the women who went to work in Oak Ridge, TN on […]

Eleanor and Park

June 5, 2014 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

This book was recommended to me thru goodreads and amazon due to my excessive John Green (who has a blurb on the back cover) habit from the beginning of the year. I can see the connection, there is definitely a the Fault in our Stars vibe about the love between two people who feel like outsiders.  I wasn’t terribly impressed with the first few chapters, but once Eleanor and Park’s flirtation begins the novel picks up. Set in 1986 Omaha. NE, Eleanor & Park is […]

Philomena, should be called Michael

June 1, 2014 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

The book I read was the movie tie-in with a forward written by Judi Dench. I am actually interested in seeing the movie now that I’ve read the book just to see how they made this particular book into a movie (I assume there is a lot of Hollywood embellishments). I say this because, for a book called Philomena, it focuses about 90% of its page space to Anthony Lee/Michael Hess. Which isn’t a bad thing, but I did spend the a day or two […]

Gone Girl

May 27, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

“Something bad was about to happen. My wife was being clever again.” “Page Turner” is the most accurate description I can come up with- it took me almost two weeks to finish Never Let Me Go and only two days to finish Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl (which is about 100 pages longer). I realize I’m late to the discusion, Gone Girl seemed to populate the internet all of last year and has been officially cast by Hollywood for an October release. I wonder if my […]

Penelope

May 25, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

My Freshman year was incredibly different then the one depicted by Rebecca Harrington’s Penelope. I arrived at my Big 12 school only knowing one girl, who spent most of her time back in Texas, and the boy who would end up being my on & off again boyfriend for the better part of two years. I then spent the next 8 months drinking, sporadically attending classes and breaking up & getting back together with said boyfriend. Sure, there are unspoken “rules” on any campus but […]
