I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

Son of a *itch

July 31, 2014 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

I read Wicked several years back, around the time the play was gaining popularity, and it took forever to read. In my mind it took forever because I was in college and a lot of my reading was for class not for pleasure. After reading Son of a Witch I realize my memory must have been kind to Wicked if it was anything like its sequel. Maybe I just like catchy musicals, not what they’re based on… I was only able to read a few […]

my mom must have been jewish in a previous life

July 3, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

My sister lent me The Jewish Daughter Diaries, not because we are Jewish, but because my mother so closely resembles the women in these essays. My mother was raised Roman Catholic by Polish-American parents, there is a lot of overlap in the parenting styles of RC Poles and Jewish mothers. Mostly guilt as a second language and a biological need to feed those who enter her house. And while my mother never meddled in my love life she has volunteered to call/ pay a visit […]

All Fall Down

June 30, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Jennifer Weiner has written some of my favorite books and is one of the authors who really introduced me to “chick lit.” She has shown me no reason to stop being faithful to her and I tend to pre-order all her novels. Allison Weiss is a mommy blogger who has it all, or at least she has it all on paper. She is married to a man who has become more of a roommate and her 5-year-old daughter is sensitive to every little thing. When […]

Will Grayson, will grayson

June 30, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I read Will Grayson, Will Grayson on a road trip with my husband, who asked what the book I was reading was about. I told him, and he responded with “Are you bullsh!tting me? Cause I’m not able to tell…” Honestly, saying the plot of Will Grayson, Will Grayson out loud really does ridiculous. Will Grayson #1 is your average high school student who alienates his group of friends when he publicly supports his gay friend, Tiny’s, right to play on the football team. Tiny […]

Every Day

June 30, 2014 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

Every Day is the story of “A” a teen who wakes up every day in the body of a different teenager. Male, female, gay, straight, rich, poor… anyone is fair game to be possessed for 24 hours. David Levithan is male, the love interest is female and for the sake of pronouns I will refer to “A” as a “he” although it is made clear that “A” is genderless. At the opening of the book “A” awakens in the body of Justin and falls in […]

It’s Kind of a Funny Story

June 23, 2014 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

It’s Kind of a Funny Story is about a 15-year old boy, Craig, who is admitted into an adult psychiatric ward after he calls a suicide hotline and discusses his intentions of jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge. Ned Vizzini wrote It’s Kind of a Funny Story after his own stay in a psych ward which shows; Vizzini is able to honestly capture what it’s like being a young kid coping with depression. “Its so hard to talk when you want to kill yourself. That’s above […]
