I think most people know who Coco Chanel is, even if all you know is she was a fashion designer. Jackie Kennedy was wearing Chanel when John was shot and Marilyn Monroe slept in nothing but Chanel No. 5… but did you know Coco Chanel was an antisemite who actually aided in the Nazi efforts during WWII? I remember, vaguely, a TV movie on the subject but it escaped my memory until stumbling upon this biography. Sleeping with the Enemy is a pretty straightforward biography- […]
The Power of Persuasion
Lexicon is the story of a group of people called Poets who are very persuasive; if they can pinpoint a person’s sector they can use certain words to compel them to do the Poet’s bidding. There are a lot of references to the Tower of Babel and word origins but overall the book is a very accessible read. I am not very into “sci-fi” or anything not particularly rooted in reality but Lexicon was compelling enough for me to overlook the silliness of word magic. […]
Ourselves, part of a Cannonball giveaway
I received the book Ourselves as part of a giveaway through Cannonball and agreed to do a review. Unfortunately, I probably wasn’t the right person to read this book. I wanted to try something else but it was a bit too outside of my norm. The Nahan are a secret race of people who resemble vampires, they are actually responsible for the myth of vampires to ward of suspicion of themselves. Tomas was born into a family of Nahan who are well positioned in the […]
The Marriage of the Century
I read How to be a Movie Star after Elizabeth Taylor passed away four years ago and was instantly taken with the story of “Liz& Dick.” Furious Love focuses primarily on the years that Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton shared together. There is background on both of their lives leading up to Rome, 1962 and the Cleopatra set but the star attraction in this biography is the 25 years they spent loving and hating each other. Anyone interested in the history of cinema knows the […]
Not So Legend-waitforit-dary
As I started this book I told my husband, a Neil Patrick Harris fan as well, I wasn’t sure how this idea would play out. As a kid I’d ruin ‘choose your own adventure’ books my bookmarking parts I wasn’t sure about so I could return to them if I was disappointed in my outcome. So perhaps I wasn’t the target audience here. The first night I read through what I could gather was an incredibly condensed, mostly true account of NPH’s life so far. […]
Escape from Shangri-la
I was so bummed when I read badkittyuno’s review last year and realized that, since it was an audiobook, I couldn’t immediately borrow Lost in Shangri-La. “At two o’clock in the afternoon it was time to go. As the passengers lined up outside the Gremlin Special, Prossen told them to expect the tour to last three hours.” In May of 1945 a morale-boosting plane ride crashed over an unexplored Dutch New Guinea valley servicemen called Shangri-la. Three survivors emerged from the crash: a lieutenant whose […]
