I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

Seemed Timely

It seemed appropriate to read Labor Day this weekend plus it’s been on my to read list since the Kate Winslet movie came out a few years ago. Henry is a thirteen-year-old boy when he is stopped by an escaped felon, Frank, at a store on Labor Day weekend. Frank asks Henry’s mother, Adele, if he can hide out at her house until the police search subsides. Adele has become a shut-in since Henry’s father left years ago but agrees to let Frank stay with […]

Autism Speaks

September 4, 2015 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

Lisa Genova’s Love Anthony is different from Still Alice and Inside the O’Briens because the story starts at the end of a neurological illness not the beginning. Anthony was an autistic young boy who passed away two years prior to the events of the novel. His mother, Olivia, spent all of her energy on him and his needs; her life subsequently crumbles after his passing, she divorces her husband and moves to their Nantucket beach home. Beth is a middle-aged stay-at-home mom who discovers her […]

Cannonball: a Family Affair

September 2, 2015 by Caitlin_D 11 Comments

I heard about Mary Anna King’s Bastards through an article on Uproxx a few months ago and clearly so did a few other people because after her book came out in late June there was a wait list at the local library. Bastards is not a completely accurate title- Mary and her siblings were born to parents who were married (although at some points separated) but financial circumstances made keeping them all together impossible. Before Mary was two her grandfather & his wife came to […]

All the Bonobos Survive

September 1, 2015 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Ape House is a perfectly serviceable book to read on your day off. It isn’t as good as Water for Elephants but I give it a solid 3.5 stars; and it isn’t much of a time commitment. Isabel Duncan works in a language lab that is researching the communication skills of bonobos; the lab is bombed which leads to the sale of the apes to an anonymous owner. Isabel is more upset that her fiance was responsible for the sale of the bonobos than she […]

The Life Worth Living

August 28, 2015 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

My Jojo Moyes kick continues with Me Before You; the unlikely love story between Louisa Clark and Will Traynor. Lou has just lost her job at the local cafe; she helps her family out financially and after numerous attempts to find a suitable job with her limited qualifications is placed with the Traynor family as a care giver for quadriplegic Will. Will was struck by a car two years ago and has been suffering from depression related to his injuries. He has made a deal […]

Helter Skelter

August 26, 2015 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

Vincent Bugliosi’s Parkland was one of the better non-fiction books I read this year and I instantly wanted to seek out Helter Skelter. As the prosecuting attorney against Manson, Bugliosi was infinitely qualified to write this book; it is both well researched and full of personal memories. Our book begins with the discovery of Sharon Tate, Abigail Folger, Jay Sebring and Voytek Frykowski along with Steven Parent at 10050 Cielo Drive followed by the murders of Rosemary and Leno LaBianca the following day. Following a […]
