At the Water’s Edge is more similar to Water for Elephants than Ape House in tone and time period, maybe that’s why I preferred it to the other Gruen novel I read this year. Maddie is an American society wife during WW2; she is married to Ellis Hyde although their relationship is constantly entwined with Hank, Ellis’ best friend. Colonel Hyde, Ellis’ father, discovered the Loch Ness monster and took the blurry pictures people are so skeptical of; in a drunken state Ellis berates his […]
Mindy Kaling is my soup snake
I finished Why Not Me in less than 18 hours (eight of which I was sleeping) which is probably why my husband would have preferred me checking out Miss Kaling’s latest from the local library but he was clearly delusional if I was waiting for 32 other people to finish first. Besides I already have my own waitlist forming between friends and family members so it was clearly a must-buy. I have avoided reading the other reviews of Why Not Me because I wanted to […]
Tricky Dick
While I love the movie Dick I graduated high school knowing the true identity of Deepthroat. I was born about 15 years after January 1973 but it is impossible to be an American citizen and be unaware of the three events that make up Robenalt’s book. In a strange way, the abortion decision matched Nixon’s political manifesto of self-reliance and his new “ask what I can do for myself” philosophy. A run down of what is covered in a brief 308 pages: – Roe v. […]
the Ship of Dreams
I read The Ship of Brides while I wait out my library’s wait-lit for Jojo Moyes’ Me After You. As I have said numerous times this year, reading a new favorite author’s first few books is not always successful; although this was better than Moriarty’s Hypnotist’s Love Story. The Ship of Brides begins in Australia after World War II. Hundreds of British and American soldiers stationed in Australia met and married Australian girls; now that the war is over these new brides must make the […]
The Roaring Twenties Were a Snore
I was one of those students who enjoyed her English Lit classes in high-school and I received two Humanities credits my Freshman year of college by taking 2000 & 3000 Level English Lit classes. Needless to say I’ve read the Great Gatsby more than once (and I’ve seen Redford as well as DiCaprio try their hand at the titular character) which drew me to Sarah Churchwell’s Careless People. I’m ashamed to admit I fell asleep more than once trying to get through this one- in […]
Service with a Smile
I work at a fancy-pants department store where Service is spelled with a capital S. While a retail store is a smaller scope than the city of New York a lot of the same principals apply. You’re leaving from DFW in two hours and have dinner plans in Las Vegas at 8pm? Well the dress you want happens to be at Fashion Show Mall let me go ahead and have them ring that up for you so all you have to do is send your […]
