After reading Parkland I immediately sought out Bugliosi’s Helter Skelter and his other works of non-fiction. Unfortunately, Outrage was not as fantastic as his previous two works. The singular reason for this was Bugliosi’s overwhelming lack of interest in writing this book. From the Introduction: They played a game during the trial, and I had minimal interest in the game. Because I am a write of true-crime books, during the past year many people suggested to me that I write a book on the case. […]
Life After You
As this is a sequel to Me Before You it goes without saying there are spoilers ahead. So stop reading this review if you haven’t read Me Before you. Are you gone now? Last call… After You picks up about two years after Will Traynor’s death. He has left enough money for Louisa to travel around Europe and buy a flat in London. He wanted her to do something with her life but her grief caused her to miss her opportunity to take the fashion […]
Bringing Home the Birkin
I think most people have heard of the elusive Hermes Birkin bag; although most people probably couldn’t pick one out of a line up and even fewer would ever attempt to own one. I worked with a client who had a black leather one and they are admittedly nice bags but spending (at minimum) $7,000 on a handbag is insane. Hermes is smart though; they have created a shortage which has only spurred the demand. Michael Tonello was a make-up artist who owned his own […]
In Space No One Can Hear You Scream Like a Little Girl
I broke the cardinal rule of being a book nerd. I saw the movie first. Let me plead my case first: I had every intention of reading The Martian prior to it’s theatrical release; I had my name on the wait list at the library but by late August I was still sitting in the low 30s. After my sister declared I had to read it sooner rather than later I went ahead and bought a copy. But then Careless People took forever to read […]
Whale Watching for Lovers
Oh look, Jojo Moyes wrote a book I liked. I will admit that it took me a little bit to get into this one; but luckily I discovered my sister was reading the same book at the same time and she assured me it got better. Or rather that the pace picked up after about 70 pages. I think my biggest complaint was there were too many narrators! While I appreciate getting multiple points of view it can get a little distracting. I believe the […]
Normal is Overrated
Unlike Alzheimer’s,Still Alice, Asperger’s,Love Anthony and Huntington’s,Inside the O’Brien’s, I have never heard of “Left Neglect”- or hemispatial neglect; but Genova, who has a degree in neuroscience, once again brings a brain disorder into the forefront of another wonderful novel. I enjoyed this story’s narrative more than Love Anthony; I also appreciated that Sarah’s condition was not a genetic risk to her children like those discussed in Still Alice and Inside the O’briens. Sarah Nickerson works too hard, she has a husband who works just […]
