I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

Not Quite YA Gold Level

Perhaps I was less enthusiastic about Weird Girl and What’s His name than badkittyuno because I didn’t have the X-Files connection to the character’s that my sister has. I was five when the series premiered and by the time I was old enough to appreciate it the show was winding down its run. However, I don’t think you need to be a sci-fi nerd to appreciate the characters and story line but it probably helps. What’s His Name, Rory, is an overweight, gay junior in […]

Let’s Paint This Town Purple

One night on Twitter, comedian Michael Ian Black invites political pundit Meghan McCain on a month long excursion around America to discuss politics with fellow Americans. He is a liberal; she is the daughter of one of the most famous Republicans today. There is a lot of “what did we get ourselves into…” throughout America, You Sexy Bitch and their mission statement wasn’t clearly defined. Yes, the talked to people throughout America about politics but the mostly drank a lot and saw tourist attractions. The […]

Melissa & Joan

October 30, 2015 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Melissa, when it comes to work, pretend you’re a hooker during Fleet Week: Say “Yes” to Everything. -Joan Rivers Melissa, better to have a new you coming out of an old car than an old you coming out of a new car.” Joan Rivers was a national treasure. After her passing Melissa was offered (at her mother’s funeral) the chance to write about her mother in time for a Mother’s Day release! She thought about what her mother would want and said Yes. I would […]

Thank goodness for consistent authors

Jennifer Weiner is one of the few writers I have the utmost faith in delivering a well-written chick-lit-lite novel. At this point I have an entire shelf dedicated to her books and my husband actually recognizes her name. Who Do You Love is told from the alternating perspectives of Rachel Blum and Andy Landis over a period of thirty years. Rachel was born with a heart defect that lands her in the hospital for several weeks when she is in middle school recovering from an […]

It Might be Easier. But it Wouldn’t be Better.

October 25, 2015 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

I wish someone had told me this simple but confusing truth: Even when everything’s going your way you can still be sad. Or anxious. Or uncomfortably numb. Because you can’t always control you brain or your emotions even when things are perfect. When I was a junior in high school I started to struggle with depression. My family has a long running history with OCD and anxiety but depression was a little bit new. My mom took it as a personal affront to her parenting […]

We’re all a little special

October 22, 2015 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I can’t remember how I heard about Ryan O’Connell’s I’m Special, I think he writes for Uproxx, but I’ve read several special gay boy memoirs in the last few years so perhaps it was a Goodreads suggestion. Ryan O’Connell has cerebral palsy. He is also gay. Needless to say he is a little special or at least has a unique perspective on life. He also got hit by a car while he was in college which allowed him to blame his cerebral palsy symptoms on […]
