I told myself, after Twisted Sisters, that I would stop reading Jen Lancaster’s works of fiction. However, the completionist in me couldn’t leave well enough alone; when I saw that The Best of Enemies was available at my local library I figured it couldn’t hurt to borrow her latest work of fiction and if it was awful I’d at least have saved the $25. So at least I’m not out $25. The Best of Enemies is the story of three women: Sarabeth Chandler, Jacqueline Jordan […]
The bigger the hair, the closer to Jesus
Dumplin’ is the story of Willowdean Dickson, an overweight teenager living in a small Texas town that only cares about football and the Clover City’s Miss Teen Blue Bonnet pageant. According to her author’s bio, Julie Murphy is a resident of North Texas; her inside knowledge of Homecoming mums and it being too hot to swim outside in the summer drive home her Texas credentials. “There is no higher achievement for a southern woman than the ability to eat barbecue and walk away stain free.” […]
Captive
I had no clue who Tayna Nicole Kach was prior to this memoir; it was recommended to me after putting Room on my “to read” list and I can see why. Memoir of a Milk Carton Kid tells the story of Tanya’s ten year ordeal as the captive of a pedophile. After her parents divorced when she was young, and her father subsequently married a woman who despised Tayna, an adolescent Kach began to develop an inappropriate relationship with a school security guard named Tom […]
Sometimes It’s OK They Let Everyone in Hollywood Write a Memoir
When you read as many memoirs as I do Goodreads is bound to recommend some seemingly random suggestions. When I saw Raj from The Big Bang Theory had written a book I thought what you’re thinking right now- “What?”- but was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. For his part, Kunal acknowledges that he probably isn’t at the right point in his life to write a memoir. Sometimes people ask me, “Why are you writing a memoir? You’re only thirty-four.” This is not a memoir. I’m […]
One out of every 10 book I read this year was by JoJo Moyes
I read eight books by Jojo Moyes this year. That’s a tenth of my reviews. Windfallen was Moyes second novel; however, like many of her early novels it was not released in the United States until a few years ago. I prefer the UK title of Foreign Fruit. I think I’m partial to her later work because they’re a little less formulaic, or maybe because I came across her recent novels first. Windfallen, like most of Moyes novels (particularly her early work), begins in the […]
And they did NOT live happily ever after
I had no clue who Jennifer Wright is (according to her author’s page she is a contributor at The New York Observer and the New York Post) prior to picking up It Ended Badly but I am a fan! She has collected 13 of the worst break ups in history ranging from the well known- Henry VIII – to the relatively unknown- Timothy Dexter. The primary takeaway I got while reading this was that it sucked to be miserable in your marriage in Victorian England. […]
