I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

“In love we find out who we want to be. In war we find out who we are”

I received several recommendations for The Nightingale and it was a great novel. Unfortunately I spent the entire time thinking it read like the first half of The Girl You Left Behind was fleshed out and made a bit more violent. It’s 1940s France- you have two sisters, a husband at war, German soldiers billeting at the pretty French girl’s home etc. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, Isabelle and Vianne, during Germany’s occupancy of France. Vianne married young and adores her husband; […]

Welcome to Shondaland

I remember being a freshman in college and gathering at the big screen TV in my floor’s common area to watch Grey’s Anatomy with a dozen other girls on Thursday nights. After “ghost Denny” my infatuation with Seattle Grace dwindled. A few years ago my husband and I started at the beginning (on Netflix) in an effort to watch the 2014-15 season live, but if we’re home on Thursdays we just watch football. With Cristina gone Grey Sloan Memorial is a lot less appealing; I’ll […]

Love in the Literary World

January 7, 2016 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

Mindy Kaling recommended The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P. on a segment of the Today Show; she likened it to Bridget Jones Diary. Unfortunately, Nate is not nearly as charming as Bridget and his story comes across as a little douchey. Nathaniel is the son of Jewish immigrants; he did well in high school, went on to study at Harvard and moved to Brooklyn, after graduation, to become a writer. Love Affairs is mostly about the year in Nate’s life leading up to his book’s […]

Well, that was good

I head about Room after Brie Larson got some acting nominations for her portrayal of Ma in the 2015 movie of the same name. My husband, however, isn’t a fan of movies that are depressing for the sake of being depressing so I opted to read the book and seek the movie out when it inevitably shows up on Netflix or Amazon Prime. I couldn’t put it down. Literally. Room is told from the perspective of five-year-old Jack; Jack lives in a room with his […]

Typing in the ’20s

I started the Other Typist at the end of December but couldn’t get into it, I ended up reading Best of Enemies and Most Talkative during breaks from the Other Typist which may explain why I have no clue what I just read. I’m not great at reading multiple books at one time… Rose is a young typist with the NYPD during Prohibition; she was raised an orphan who received a scholarship to school where she learned to type as an opportunity to support herself. […]

First Review of the Year

January 2, 2016 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

Happy New Year Cannonballers! So my sister read Most Talkative as one of her 260 books last year and lent me her copy because she knew it would appeal to me on my most shallow level. Or maybe because she christened me as most talkative decades ago and wanted me to read about my male counterpart? While badkittyuno glossed over the Bravo portion of Andy’s life, I could put names to faces. I still watch Top Chef, was briefly obsessed with Flipping Out and watched […]
