“It’s really not that hard to put food on the table if that’s what you decide to do.” I started to read Jeannette Walls the Glass Castle a couple months ago but had to put it down due to some scenes involving animal neglect. I finally got around to picking it back up and I’m glad I did. The Glass Castle is a hard read (not just because they abandon animals they pick up but can’t care for) but it’s thoroughly engrossing. Jeannette’s father, Rex, […]
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
“At some point, I realized the horrible truth–the United States and its allies could win every single battle in Afghanistan and blow up every single alleged top militant in Pakistan, but still lose this war.” Like most of America I adore Tina Fey; but like most of America I skipped her recent film Whiskey Tango Foxtrot because it looked a little campy for my tastes. However, I sought out the memoir, Taliban Shuffle, because it seemed like a chief complaint of the movie was that […]
Big Bada Bang
My utter enjoyment of How I Killed Pluto and Why it had it Coming led me to seek out another book on astronomical discovery. Unlike Pluto, The Day we Found the Universe is a bit drier; it spans a longer time period and over a dozen astronomers. “Hubble was lucky in a way. The Hubble Space Telescope could easily have been given another name had certain events turned out differently: if someone had not prematurely died (Keeler), if someone else had not taken a promotion […]
Teens Gone Wild
Getting my YA Week book in just under the wire, although DC Trip is probably somewhere between YA and true Adult Fiction due to language (the group of mean girls is referred to as the “cuntriad” and the prefix is used a lot) and some of the trip’s shenanigans. Sara Benincasa’s DC Trip focuses on a group of New Jersey teenagers who visit the Capitol for a high school trip; the narration bounces between shy Gertie and hippie teacher Alicia. Gertie finds out her summer […]
The Couple that Slays Together Stays Together
I don’t know how Married with Zombies came to be on my Goodreads recommendation list, perhaps Warm Bodies or even Station Eleven triggered its algorithim. The writing style is very amateurish but the story is cute enough- it’s a silly, mostly enjoyable take on the zombie apocalypse. But I have to say, the zombie plague saved my marriage. And if you follow the rules, have each other’s backs and stick together… it could save yours, too Sarah and Dave are trying to save their relationship through marriage counseling, unfortunately on their way […]
I really wanted to like this more than I did…
I’ve read most of Augusten Burroughs’s previous memoirs; my favorite of his books, Running with Scissors, is probably his most popular- it even inspired a movie adaptation. In his latest memoir, Lust & Wonder, Burroughs recounts the three big romantic relationships he had spanning the few years prior to his writing career taking off to the present day. Burroughs is a mess. He’s made a career of being a mess. The events of this book highlight how much of a mess he is, primarily in […]
