I skipped CBR for 2020 because I was expecting my first child and knew time would be finite. Then the world imploded and I missed the crap out of y'all. Plus I read so much less without y'all's recommendations! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Caitlin_D's Quick Questions interview.)

The Greatest Love Story Ever Told by Megan Mullally, Nick Offerman

May 28, 2019 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

Like most red blooded Americans I am a huge fan of Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally both as individual actors and as a couple. The duo are best known for their respective portrayals of Ron Swanson & Karen Walker but throughout the years they’ve become synonymous with #CoupleGoals and for good reason. The Greatest Love Story Ever Told is an oral history of their lives together and is probably best enjoyed in the audio-book format. I actually don’t know how this would work on paper, I’m […]

An Asian Pacific Heritage Month Reading

Empress Dowager Cixi: The Concubine Who Launched Modern China by Jung Chang

May 28, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

My library had Empress Dowager Cixi on Overdrive this month as part of Asian American History Month and, knowing very little about Chinese history, decided to check it out. Chang’s biography of the Dowager Empress is both exhaustive and exhausting. While it has its moments 19th century history isn’t always interesting and Chang, who essentially regurgitates facts for 400 pages, does little to spice up the narrative. That’s a bit unfair to Cixi, whose story requires very little extra spice, but more a critique of Chang’s writing […]

It’s Erin– Ms Gibson if you’re Feminasty

Feminasty: The Complicated Woman's Guide to Surviving the Patriarchy Without Drinking Herself to Death by Erin Gibson

May 23, 2019 by Caitlin_D 6 Comments

I live in a state where Ted “Zodiac Killer” Cruz beat Beto O’Rouke in the Senate, where Greg Abbot succeeded Rick Perry as Governor and where we are so pro-life anti- choice we are considering sentencing women who make the personal decision to have an abortion to the death penalty.  Some days it just feels impossible but it isn’t! And when you’re ready to laugh a little through your outrage Erin Gibson will be there for you with Feminasty.  I read Gibson’s Feminasty last week when […]

Not as good as It Takes Two but not bad

The Princess and the Fangirl (Once Upon a Con, #2) by Ashley Poston

May 23, 2019 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

“I’m Jess- Jessica Stone,” says a girl on the stage, but it isn’t me. This isn’t happening. This is impossible The Princess and the Fangirl is a modern retelling of The Prince and the Pauper as told in the universe that 2017’s Geekerella takes place. Elle and Darien are tertiary characters this go around and our focus is instead on Darien’s costar Jessica and Imogen, a young woman running a campaign to keep Jessica’s character in the upcoming Starfield sequel. The story is told in alternating perspectives during ExcelsiCon where the two […]

“Everyone in my life is a stranger, and that includes me.”

Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven

May 23, 2019 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

I enjoyed the heartbreaking All the Bright Places so when I saw Jennifer Niven’s follow up, Holding Up the Universe, I snapped it up. Niven again focuses on two teens who, up until now, have had no reason to spend any time together but are weighed down by similar stories. Jack Masselin is a popular high school baseball player with an on again off again relationship with the star of the drill team. He also has Prosopagnosia, a disorder where you cannot recognize faces even the faces of […]

Welcome to Gracetown

Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland

May 23, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Henry Page has led a fairly uneventful life; his young life’s ambition is to be editor of his high school newspaper and eventually get into a good college. Then the aloof Grace Town comes walking (limping?) into his life using a cane, wearing oversized boys’ clothing and keeping mostly to herself. The two of them are named co-editors of the newspaper and because this is a work of YA Henry finds himself falling for the mysterious manic pixie dream girl. Like any good MPDG worth […]
